Dr. Thomas Yoon, Dean of the LECOM School of Dental Medcine, shares the appointment of Dr. Mary Badawy as Director of Problem-Based Learning (PBL).
"Dr. Badawy has been a cornerstone of our PBL program for nearly a decade, consistently demonstrating excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and faculty mentorship. As an Associate Professor of Pharmacology, she has played a key role in shaping student success and in maintaining academic outcomes that exceed national benchmarks.
Her leadership extends beyond the classroom, training new PBL faculty, guiding curriculum innovation, and supporting student development across all levels. In this new role, she will continue to strengthen and advance our PBL program through faculty development, case integration, and data-driven program improvement."

Third-year medical student Maggie Ferrara says her rotations at hospitals like Flagler in St. Augustine are really valuable, and it's easy to see why.

At UF Health Flagler Hospital, our students get to step into meaningful roles straightaway. This means students like Maggie aren't just watching from the sidelines. They're able to assist right from the get-go, trust their training, and build the confidence they will need in their future careers.

LECOM alum Dr. Joel Klein met legendary former Pirates pitcher Steve Blass recently at a game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and coincidentally ran into Dr. Karl Falk, Dr. Vincent Fierro, and Dr. Silvia Ferretti, Provost, Senior Vice President, and Dean of Academic Affairs.

While the game and meet-and-greet were a LECOM auction prize for Drs. Falk and Fierro, running into Dr. Klein was a fantastic surprise!

Recently completing his PM&R residency with Rochester Regional Health, Dr. Klein has begun his fellowship at the University of Rochester in Non-Surgical Spine and Sports Medicine.

He has also created and holds the patent for a multifunctional exercise bench that he developed. Congratulations on all your achievements, Dr. Klein!

Looks like it was a great day to be at the ball park!

Dr. Danielle Dunetz, Dr. Sunita Mathew, and Dr. Christina Welc enjoyed a walk-through of the facilities, revisited lecture halls, and had a chance to visit with Dr. Silvia Ferretti, Provost, Senior Vice President, and Dean of Academic Affairs.

Starting clinical rotations can feel overwhelming. There's so much to take in, new responsibilities, and then all of a sudden, you're applying everything you've learned in real life.

There is some magic in this.

OMS3 Maggie Ferrara found her stride at Flagler Hospital, where she's experienced a "first assist" culture amongst her preceptors. Working closely with them, she is actively participating, thinking through differential diagnoses, proposing care plans, and getting immediate feedback that only enhances her clinical skills and instincts.

It's hands-on, fast paced, and exactly the kind of environment that helps our future physicians grow confidently.
