The first cohort of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) students at
Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Festus, Missouri have begun their first clinical rotation year.
LECOM, as one of the largest medical colleges in the nation, recently celebrated the
opening of its new regional campus at Mercy Jefferson – its first Midwest location.
Mercy Jefferson hosted a Blessing of the Hands and an opening celebration on June 21,
2024, to welcome 12 third-year scholars. First Rotation at Mercy Jefferson Upon hearing the news that LECOM was opening this new regional campus, Olivia Cossins asked to transfer to the new location for her fourth year of studies. “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to be closer to home and to get the medical
education I’m seeking from LECOM,” Cossins beamed. “LECOM is such a great fit for
so many of us; I’m excited that it will be more accessible to those of us in the Midwest,”
the scholar stated. The addition of LECOM to the Jefferson County community provides many great
opportunities in the region. “This is a tremendous addition for our county and for all of our residents,” the Jefferson
County Executive, Dennis Gannon, said. “It’s an educational opportunity for residents,
especially those who take advantage of the LECOM Early Acceptance Program. It will
draw students seeking advanced degrees, helping to grow our population. It will help us
retain and add physicians who want the opportunity to serve as faculty. It will draw
additional physicians who choose to stay here to serve our county, after completing their
medical education. There are so many positives that will come from having LECOM
here,” Gannon affirmed. Through the Early Acceptance Program, LECOM and Mercy will team with local high
schools and colleges to identify potential medical school candidates and guide them in

Dr. Michael DiGiorno, a well-recognized and highly esteemed member of the St. John’s
Riverside Hospital medical staff, has been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer for the
Hospital. Dr. Michael DiGiorno
This appointment marks a significant milestone for the hospital as Dr. DiGiorno is the first
physician to hold the key leadership position at St. John’s Riverside. Since 2006, his extensive experience and profound understanding of hospital operations have
been evident; attributes that uniquely qualify him for this noteworthy position. Dr. DiGiorno is a highly-regarded nephrologist who has cared for the greater New York City
(Yonkers) region for nearly twenty years. Most recently, Dr. DiGiorno has served as Medical Director of St. John’s Medical Group (SJMG), overseeing the extensive growth of that practice. He has served as Vice President of Medical Operations since 2020, restructuring ancillary
services and strategically planning and achieving hospital goals. As a Class of 2000 graduate of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), his expert education and training have guided him as he successfully collaborated with nursing, physicians, administration, and support staff. The venerable physician has served as a dedicated LECOM Regional Dean and an administrator at the hospital. With more than twenty years of diverse experience, he is board certified in
internal medicine and nephrology, sharing his wealth of knowledge with scholars within his
sphere. Dr DiGiorno has played an integral role in advancing the LECOM education program. He
worked assiduously to create new clinical rotation sites and to modify the clinical clerkship
experience. Indeed, Dr. DiGiorno was instrumental in founding the St. John’s Riverside Hospital medical
education programs, including establishing the first Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency Programs in the history of Yonkers. Dr. DiGiorno also completed his Master’s in Health Service Administration at LECOM,

My name is Alexandria Ingraham and I am an incoming D1. I grew up all around but lived the longest in Colorado Springs. I went to undergrad at Florida Southern College in Lakeland and really loved my time there. Through the connection between LECOM and my college, I applied into the Early Acceptance Program in my first year and was so thankful to have the reassurance to an amazing school so I could really focus on my classes and other opportunities. I chose LECOM not just because of the location or the EAP program, but also for their ability to get my into the clinic and working with patients very early. I am excited to work on my patient interaction skills and get comfortable before our fourth year in full clinic. Fun fact is I used to live in Japan for 6 years from 7th to 12th grade!

The class of 2028 is coming close to their White Coat Ceremony- let's hear what a third-year student has to say about her ceremony! The white coat ceremony was and still is one of my favorite events that occurred during my time at LECOM. This event was a beautiful day that allowed me to celebrate my achievements with my friends and family, while taking a break from the stress of the classroom and looking forward to the future. Now, leading up to my final semester on campus, I look forward to using the skills and materials I learned in the classroom, while adding real-life clinical examples from rotations. -Allison Sowers
