The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) extends its hearty congratulations to fourth-year medical student, Taylor E. Collignon, who successfully presented a poster entitled, Cancer Prevention with Nutritional Science: Addressing the Gap in Clinical Medicine, at the Annual Conference of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. The Conference was held from October 27-30, 2024 in Orlando, Florida.

Taylor performed her research under the guidance of Anupam Bishayee, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Director of Research, LECOM-Bradenton.

Meet Student Doctor Samuel Schuler

Samuel graduated from the LECOM Master of Medical Science Program last year and has now matriculated into the Osteopathic Medicine program. The Master of Medical Science Program prepares students to have an easy transition into the Osteopathic Medicine program and provides them with the right tools and material to succeed while in the program.

“The MMS program at LECOM was a beneficial experience for me, and I couldn’t recommend it more to anyone considering medical school. The curriculum not only deepened my understanding of the basic medical sciences necessary for success in OMS1 but also helped me develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in med school and beyond. What really stood out to me was the community of faculty and peers who were always supportive and invested in my success. Any time I needed advice or help with coursework; they were available and willing to assist. The MMS schedule prepared me for the rigor of medical school, emphasizing the importance of time management in order to achieve academic success. The MMS program provided a foundation in knowledge and study skills that helped me gain confidence before beginning medical school and has allowed me to become a stronger medical student.”

LECOM medical scholars from the Bradenton, Florida Campus put forth a noticeable presence at the David A. Paulus, M.D. Poster Symposium during the Annual Meeting of Florida Medical Association (FMA) in Orlando, Florida, August 2-4, 2024. Several key posters were presented by LECOM students.

Intelligent.com, a widely respected source for higher education rankings and research, has raised LECOM’s ranking for Best Online Master’s in Health Services Degree Programs from #5 in 2021 to #3 in 2025. The first MHSA class of 11 students graduated in June 2015. As of June 2024, the MHSA program has matriculated a total of ten cohorts resulting in 424 graduates. The recognition by intelligent.com reinforces LECOM’s status as a leader in higher education.

Using a data-driven methodology, Intelligent.com evaluated programs across a broad range of criteria, including academic quality, graduation rates, cost and return on investment (ROI), and student resources. Each program was scored on a proprietary scale of 0 to 100, drawing on trusted sources like the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard, U.S. News & World Report, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This rigorous evaluation ensures that only institutions and programs with a proven track record of academic excellence and strong student outcomes receive recognition. The LECOM MHSA program scored 98.9.

The American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) celebrated its 75th Anniversary this year at the American Osteopathic Association OMED Conference. For 75 years, the AOF has supported the osteopathic profession; and each year, the Foundation has held its Gala in conjunction with the OMED event. This year, the Honors Gala was held on Friday, September 20, 2024 at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio RiverWalk.

One of the highlights of the evening for the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) was AOF recognition of Robert W. Hostoffer, Jr., D.O. as recipient of the 2024 AOF Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Hostoffer earned his Masters in Medical Education (MsMEd) from LECOM in 2019. At LECOM, Dr. Hostoffer developed the Scholar12 App to promote research as his LECOM Masters in Medical Education thesis. Since then, he has been instrumental in incorporating the Scholar12 App into the Geriatric/OPP Rotation as foundational training for the Scholar12 Group-Mentor Osteopathic Research Poster Project.

Dr. Hostoffer, board-certified in Allergy and Immunology, is one of Ohio’s top-rated physician/researchers. Through the University Hospitals Allergy-Immunology Fellowship Program, he has served as a mentor for the Scholar12 Group-Mentor Osteopathic Research Poster Project and has further advanced the Scholar12 Group-Mentor Osteopathic Research Poster Project assisting LECOM in meeting and exceeding goals for research in multiple areas.

Dr. Hostoffer has served as a LECOM stalwart in supporting the LECOM Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Grand Rounds. Since the inception of the system-wide LECOM OMM Grand Round series in 2020-2021, Dr. Hostoffer has presented 2-4 Grand Rounds presentations during each Academic Year.

He has provided LECOM Workshops and Didactics for LECOM students, both in person and virtually, for the last 20 years and he has served as LECOM Northeast Ohio Pediatric Clerkship Director, developing a model to train LECOM students for the LECOM Pediatrics Clerkship for NE Ohio, a cause he has undertaken since 2007.

On Monday, October 28, 2024, the Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) chapter at LECOM at Seton Hill held a successful fundraiser with a local Chipotle in Greensburg. From 4-8 pm, students, families, friends, and members of the Greensburg community were invited to come to the participating Chipotle location. Guests who showed the SIGN flyer or used a special online code during these hours contributed to the fundraiser, as Chipotle donated a portion of the proceeds to support the SIGN chapter’s upcoming initiatives.

The event was a great opportunity for community members to enjoy a meal while supporting a meaningful cause. The funds raised will help SIGN enhance their events for next year, including activities planned for the club fair, which serves as an essential opportunity for engaging new members and fostering interest in neurology. Additionally, part of the proceeds will go toward the club’s next philanthropic project, making “Jared’s Boxes” for hospitalized children. This project allows our SIGN chapter at LECOM at Seton Hill to make a direct, positive impact in our community by supporting the well-being of children facing medial challenges. Through this event, our SIGN chapter is well-positioned to continue its mission of service, education, and compassion in the coming years.
