The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) has seen the continued need for dentists across the nation, including Pennsylvania. The state of Pennsylvania has been identified as a dental provider shortage area. This leads to inadequacies in delivering dental care for individuals and families who are unable to find affordable treatment options, especially for children. It has been shown that early dental health treatment leads to better adult health, including lower cardiac disease risk. To help alleviate that shortage LECOM has opened a dental office at 2000 West Grandview Blvd. where fourth-year dental students will gain clinical experience working in an underserved community.

The presence of the dental office helps to improve the health status of the community by providing comprehensive care and general dentistry for all ages. Each spring, 50 fourth-year LECOM School of Dental Medicine students begin 48-week primary care clinical rotation in Erie, PA. The students work under direct supervision of licensed dentists and will see patients of all ages. LECOM employee the latest diagnostic tools such as digital X-rays, lasers, and intra-oral scanning. Students will keep track of patient records with state-of-the-art electronic medical record software. Each student has a treatment room where they will provide comprehensive dental care service which includes: cleanings, periodontal treatments, crowns, root canal therapy, extractions, restorations, dental implant crowns, and full and partial dental prostheses treatments.
