The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) has seen the continued need for dentists across the nation, including Pennsylvania. The state of Pennsylvania has been identified as a dental provider shortage area. This leads to inadequacies in delivering dental care for individuals and families who are unable to find affordable treatment options, especially for children. It has been shown that early dental health treatment leads to better adult health, including lower cardiac disease risk. To help alleviate that shortage LECOM has opened a dental office at 2000 West Grandview Blvd. where fourth-year dental students will gain clinical experience working in an underserved community.
The presence of the dental office will improve the health status of the community by providing comprehensive care and general dentistry for all ages. Each spring, 50, fourth-year LECOM School of Dental Medicine students, who already have one-year of clinical experience, will begin a 48-week general dental clinic rotation in Erie. Students provide care in a state of the art facility utilizing modern technologies including digital x-ray and electronic health records. The students work under direct supervision of licensed dentists. Each student has a treatment room where they will provide comprehensive dental care services including but not limited to: cleanings, periodontal treatments, crowns, root canal therapy, extractions, dental restorations and full and partial dentures.
