The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) has seen the continued need for dentists across the nation, especially in Florida and the Gulf Coast states. Florida ranks third in the nation for the number of communities designated as Dental Health Shortage Areas. With one-out-of five residents lacking insurance, the burden falls on Florida emergency rooms where treating preventable dental conditions costs more than $88 million. To help alleviate that shortage, LECOM has brought much-needed dental health care to the community of DeFuniak Springs. LECOM opened dental offices at 101 LECOM Way (formerly Microspine Way). The presence of a dental office in DeFuniak Springs has improved the health status of the community by providing comprehensive care and general dentistry for all age groups.

The dental practice sites at the DeFuniak Springs dental office are located in a fully-equipped, state-of-the-art facility. Each spring, 50, fourth-year LECOM School of Dental Medicine students, who already have one-year of clinical experience, will begin a 48-week primary care clinical rotation in DeFuniak Springs. The students work under direct supervision of licensed dentists and will see patients of all ages. We employ the latest diagnostic tools such as digital X-rays for the full mouth and individual teeth. Students will keep track of patient records with state-of-the-art electronic medical record software. Each student has a treatment room where they will provide comprehensive dental care service under the supervision of an experienced dental teaching staff. This includes: cleanings, periodontal treatments, crowns, root canal therapy, extractions, dental restorations and full and partial dental prostheses treatments.
