There is a growing need for dentists across the nation, including in Pennsylvania, where the state has been identified as dental provider shortage area. The shortage results in challenges for individuals and families, particularly in accessing affordable dental care, with children often bearing the brunt of these difficulties. Research shows that early dental health treatment can contribute to better overall health in adulthood, including a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases.

To help address this shortage, LECOM has established a dental clinic at 2000 West Grandview Blvd., providing a valuable resource for the community. Here, fourth-year dental students gain clinical experience while working in an underserved area.

The dental clinic not offers comprehensive care but also improves the health of the community by providing general dentistry services for patients of all ages. Each Spring, 50 fourth-year students at LECOM School of Dental Medicine began an intensive 48-week primary care clinical rotation in Erie, PA. During this rotation, students work under the direct supervision of licensed dentists, treating a wide range of patients.

LECOM employs the latest diagnostic tools. including digital X-rays, lasers, and intra-oral scanning. Additionally, students maintain patient records using state-of-the-art electronic medical record software. In their individual treatment rooms, students provide a variety of comprehensive dental services, such as cleanings, periodontal treatments, crowns, root canal therapy, extractions, restorations, dental implants, and both full and partial dental protheses treatments. This hands-on experience not only helps students develop critical skills but also serves the community by offering quality dental care in an area with high need.
