The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) recognizes the ongoing need for dental care across the nation, particularly in Florida and the Gulf Coast states. Florida ranks first in the country for the number of communities designated as Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas. With one in five residents lacking dental insurance, the burden often falls on Florida’s emergency rooms, where treating preventable dental conditions costs more than $550 million annually. To address this shortage, LECOM has established a vital dental health resource in the community by offering comprehensive dental care and general dentistry services for individuals of all ages.

The DeFuniak Springs dental clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and the latest diagnostic tools, including digital X-rays, lasers, and intra-oral scanning. Every spring, 50 fourth-year students from the LECOM School of Dental Medicine begin a 48-week primary care clinical rotation in DeFuniak Springs, where they work directly under the supervision of licensed dentists. Students provide dental care to patients of all ages, using cutting-edge technology to track patient records through advanced electronic medical record software.

Each student has access to a dedicated treatment room, where they deliver a wide range of services, including cleanings, periodontal treatments, crowns, root canal therapy, extractions, restorations, dental implant crowns, and full and partial dental prosthesis treatments. This hands-on experience not only allows students to develop essential clinical skills but also ensures that the community receives high-quality dental care.
