General Guidelines

Introduction:

LECOM provides electronic communication devices, equipment, and technology, encompassing telephones, email, voicemail, computer files, the Internet, facsimile machine, pagers, and cellular telephones (referred to collectively as “electronic devices”). These electronic devices are furnished to facilitate the efficient conduct of business of LECOM.

Ownership and Monitoring:

All electronic devices the data stored on them are the exclusive property of LECOM. The institution maintains a legitimate business interest in the proper utilization of this property. Consequently, LECOM reserves the right to monitor, retrieve, or access any data composed, sent, or received on LECOM property. Students utilizing LECOM-provided electronic devices are deemed to have consented to the monitoring and access of their device usage at LECOM’s discretion. The should be no expectation or privacy in such usage.

Content Guidelines:

It is strictly prohibited for any data composed, sent, or retrieved via electronic devices to contain content that may reasonably be considered offensive or disruptive to any student. Offensive content includes, but is not limited to, derogatory comments that would offend someone based on sex, age, race, color, national origin, religion, disability, veteran status, or any other protected class. Students’ use of LECOM electronic devices is also subject to the Harassment-Free Workplace policy.

Enforcement:

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including but not limited to, the restriction or revocation of electronic device privileges, academic consequences, or other appropriate measures as deemed necessary by LECOM.
