Meet a Member of the Class of 2025: Pharmacy graduate Hassan Sleiman - "Being a part of the LECOM Erie community these past three years has been nothing short of incredible. I’ve had the chance to build lifelong friendships, create lasting memories, and connect with so many inspiring people along the way. I’m especially thankful for all of the opportunities LECOM has given me to grow both personally and professionally. LECOM Erie will always hold a special place in my heart for the support, growth, and sense of family it provided throughout this journey.

As I take the next step in my journey, I’m excited to begin a fellowship in the pharmaceutical industry with AstraZeneca Rare Diseases | Alexion, joining the Pharmaceutical Development and Clinical Supply (PDCS) team. LECOM Wishes Dr. James Gnarra Well in Retirement

Dr. James Gnarra, a deeply valued and longtime member of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) family, is joining the ranks of the retired.

The whole of LECOM - faculty, staff, and students - wish him a happy and healthful onward journey. During Dr. Gnarra’s time with LECOM, he has demonstrated himself as an outstanding professional and educator, ever seeking the betterment of osteopathic education and the advancement of the institution.

Throughout his many years with the College, he served LECOM with dedication, with integrity, and with wisdom, all noble attributes that are increasingly precious in this era.

In 2016, Dr. Gnarra was named Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology; and in 2017, he was promoted to a full professorship, also serving as Director of Research for LECOM. From 2018 to 2020, he served as the LECOM Director of the Master of Medical Science Program. Also in 2020, Dr. Gnarra was named Associate Dean of Pre-Clinical Education. During his time at LECOM, he has served as the Chairman of the Nominating and Research Committees, and as Vice Chairman of the Curriculum Committee.
He has been a stalwart member of the Problem-Based Learning Case Review Committee, and he has served on the Student Promotion and Graduation Committee. Dr. Gnarra also is a member of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. He has notably represented LECOM on the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee for the Council of Florida Medical School Deans. Dr. Gnarra also has distinguished himself as Deputy Editor of the Medical Journal, Cureus.

LECOM thanks Dr. Gnarra for his intently focused years working in a rigorous academic institution as he has imparted knowledge upon future healthcare professionals.

Dr. Gnarra's contribution to LECOM will serve as a positive example to those who follow him.

May the next chapter of his life bring him abundant health, golden moments, and glorious memories.

LECOM Erie Pharmacy student Sareen Mustafa is a recipient of the Student Leadership Award and is headed to a residency at Cleveland Clinic.

"Becoming a part of the LECOM Erie family over the last three years has truly been one of the most meaningful chapters of my life. The friends I’ve met, the mentors who have guided me, and the memories made along the way will be cherished forever.

As I move forward after graduation, I’m incredibly excited to begin the next step of my journey as an acute care PGY1 pharmacy resident at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. I’m so grateful for all the support and experiences that helped me get to this point."

Meet a Member of the Class of 2025: Caroline Semelsberger
A third-year pharmacy student at LECOM Erie, Caroline is excited to be staying in the Erie area post-graduation, as she has matched into an Ambulatory Care PGY1 residency at Saint Vincent Hospital. “I am eager to pursue an ambulatory care residency because I am truly passionate about providing continuous, patient-centered care that enhances lifelong health outcomes.”
Caroline is also the recipient of the Student Leadership Award for the Class of 2025. “I’m incredibly honored and humbled to have been selected for this award - a recognition that holds a deep meaning for me. It reflects the three-year journey I’ve shared with my amazing classmates, who have continuously inspired and supported me. Likewise, I’m deeply grateful for the unwavering guidance of the LECOM faculty and staff, who have played such an influential role in fostering the leader I strive to be.”
“Overall, my three years at LECOM have been among the most meaningful and transformative of my life. It has been a place of growth, learning, and unwavering support, where I’ve been shaped not only as a future pharmacist, but as a person.
