As LECOM Erie's SNMA president for the 2024-2025 school year, one of my goals was to create a fun learning opportunity that incorporated the importance of diversity in medicine. I came up with the idea to create a Microbiology Jeopardy that featured images of disease presentations on brown and black skin. So often, medical education materials don’t reflect the full diversity of our patient population, and this can lead to missed or delayed diagnoses. Through this game, SNMA highlighted the importance of recognizing how conditions appear on different skin tones to promote more inclusive learning for all future healthcare providers!

Growing Community- Student Doctor Gavin Los and other LECOM Erie students are working with The Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network through a grant that allows for community gardens here in Erie, providing healthy food, beautifying urban spaces, and strengthening the community.

“LECOM felt like home before I even got there.”

The EAP program at LECOM gave me so many opportunities that I couldn't have gotten elsewhere. After being accepted while in high school, I attended Allegheny College, where the EAP program opened up a big door for me.

The opportunity turned into a summer research opportunity working in Dr. David Duriancik's lab and meeting faculty from all the different pathways and departments to ask questions and seek advice. We even received a few OPP lectures from LECOM Erie’s amazing faculty.

I continued this partnership all the way through undergrad and during my first 2 years so far here at LECOM. I even got to present our work at a conference in Texas before matriculating!

From this opportunity, LECOM felt like home before I even got there. It led to me forming connections, building confidence in my research skills, and even a recent publication that will help boost my resume for residency applications. I couldn't be more grateful!

Alumnus Dr. Brian Kessler continues to soar, shine, and inspire

We're proud to share that 1999 LECOM graduate Brian Kessler, DO, DHA, MS, was appointed to the U.S. Department of Education's Negotiated Rulemaking Committee on Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization.

Dr. Kessler has more than 25 years of experience in leadership roles, including as Dean of the Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine at Campbell University, Dean at Lincoln Memorial University, and Director of Medical Education at Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital.

Dr. Kessler has also served on the Board of Directors of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. He is also Past President of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

LECOM School of Dental Medicine’s Dr. Susan Calderbank, her husband Ray Olsen, and Mr. Mike O'Connor, owner of The Ridge Golf Course, celebrate the 3rd annual MARGE FUND Golf Outing.
14 foursomes participated, and all prize money was donated back. The Fatica Family came out in force with 4 foursomes! The winning foursome from the Pittsburgh Mission of Mercy came in at 15 under par.
Dr. Calderbank founded the Marge Fund to provide free dental care to cancer patients, helping them eliminate oral infection before beginning chemotherapy or radiation.
Our next golf scramble to benefit the Marge Fund will be August 6, 2027. See you next year!

Students from Delaney’s Athletic Club’s Ringside to Bedside program had the opportunity to “scrub in” for a mock surgery experience alongside our third-year students at LECOM at Elmira.

Experiences like these give our local high school student-athletes a look at the teamwork and compassion in medicine. Thank you to our students and faculty who took the time to mentor and inspire the next generation.

2 Students, 2 Scholarships = Lasting Community Impact

LECOM at Elmira and Corning Incorporated, through the Future Foundations Health Scholarships program, are fully covering the tuition for two students pursuing their D.O. degree at LECOM Elmira.
Congratulations to Beatriz Cayuela and Brooklyn Naylor, whose commitment to the Southern Tier region of New York State and passion for providing excellent care to their community have earned them these scholarships.
Created to address the physician shortage in the area, these scholarships require Brooklyn and Beatriz to stay and practice in the region once they’ve completed their residencies – and they’re happy to do so, both saying they know the need exists, and they want to serve the community.
LECOM at Elmira Dean Dr. Richard Terry says this is an investment in the future, and that the region needs more doctors.
Division VP for Corning Inc. Community Impact, Millicent Ruffin, says the scholarships let people know this area is a great place to be a part of, and it “starts with two students, and then it spreads. We’re looking at this as a ripple effect.”

Dream Team energy - My husband and I are very intentional about protecting our relationship, even during the busiest seasons of pharmacy school and his full-time career. While my evenings are often spent studying, we make it a priority to have dinner together and check in with one another.

We also set clear boundaries around quality time. Fridays are “our” nights, and we typically avoid making outside plans so we can go to dinner or do something intentional together. This gives us something to look forward to each week and helps us reset.

To reduce stress and prevent burnout, we split household responsibilities and step in for each other during heavier weeks, which reinforces that we’re a team. These small, consistent habits help us stay close and support each other through the demands of a professional program and full-time work.

Student Doctor Harsh Soni from the LEOCOM Bradenton campus was selected as 1 of only 27 students nationwide for a National Multiple Sclerosis Society mentorship and scholarship to work under Dr. Ellen Mowry at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

"Over the past month, I've had the privilege of being mentored by Dr. Mowry and Dr. Philippines Cabahug, gaining exposure to MS clinical care, research trials, and spinal cord rehabilitation. I also spent time in interventional spine and pain medicine, where I got to connect with physicians in my specialty of interest and received opportunities to participate in research.

Overall, this was a great intersection between neurology and physiatry, and I would highly recommend it to other interested students."

A Legacy of Learning; A Future Without Limits

Congratulations to OMS-I Dailan Goodman on being one of 27 students across the country awarded the Jim Castañeda Scholarship through Conference USA! As part of that recognition, Dailan will interview for their Limitless Series, which highlights current and former college athletes.

The son of alumnus Dr. Gens Goodman, Dailan says he looks forward to highlighting his acceptance to LECOM and how excited he is to be starting his medical education here.

He has a lot to love about LECOM, and it started at an early age! No stranger to the Erie campus, Dailan has memories of his father bringing him to the anatomy cadaver lab when he was very young - surely sparking a passion for lifelong learning and discovery!

The day I received my White Coat was more than a milestone; it was a manifestation of God’s promise. From my MMS journey to this moment, every step has been a testimony of faith, perseverance, and purpose.

Sharing this day with my daughter, the little girl who watches me chase my purpose, reminded me that this calling is bigger than me. It’s a promise to her that every dream is possible with faith and dedication.

Attending LECOM Erie is truly a blessing, an open door created by God to fulfill my lifelong destiny of becoming a doctor and making my family proud. As a member of the LECOM Erie Pediatrics Club, I had the opportunity to go to a local elementary school in Erie, PA, and participate in its science fair. As a club, we took numerous medical tools and games to engage with the kids and introduce them to the field of medicine. I am highly interested in pursuing a career in pediatrics, so this was a great opportunity to work with children and hopefully inspire them to pursue a career in any medical field.
