LECOM at Seton Hill SOMA & Addiction Club hold Fentanyl Facts event
A presentation on the effects of fentanyl and its impact on the community was recently given by the Student Osteopathic Medical Association and the Addiction Medicine Club at LECOM Seton Hill.
SOMA’s Overdose Prevention Chair Bryn Anteau and the Addiction Medicine Club’s representative chair, Alexis Nash, created a presentation about Fentanyl, its biochemical properties, and its mark on Westmoreland County. The session was joined by Dr. Jennifer Commings, LECOM faculty member and Emergency Medicine specialist.
The speakers then had attendees play a game based on the slide material – winners received gift cards from local restaurants, making for a fun, friendly contest.
The clubs plan to host their annual Naloxone Training in the fall under Dr. Cumming’s guidance.

Early Acceptance Program provides the perfect path to Medical Education -- As an individual admitted into LECOM via the Early Acceptance Program, I felt one step ahead of my peers as an undergraduate student. The greatest benefit was a secured spot in medical school, and better yet, no MCAT stress! This relieved me of any admissions and test-taking anxiety that plagues many applicants yearly.

The EAP streamlines a direct route from undergraduate studies to medical school, and the EAP program is cost-effective. It cuts out extra application fees and gave me more personal control over my education timeline. Overall, the Early Acceptance Program offers an ideal and intuitive way to enter medical school.

I chose the Lecture-Discussion Pathway for multiple reasons. I am a very structured person and need a daily routine. I was familiar with the lecture style from high school and college, so I decided to keep that learning style. I need to hear the information presented in lecture along with reading the information from the slides. This allows two perspectives. If I am still confused, I can go to the textbook for a third perspective. I am very grateful for my decision and would choose this pathway again. – Dustin Moffett

Research Published! Student Doctors Huda Khan and Justin Jebackumar each had their articles recently published in Cureus, with attending physicians at Mercy Hospital Jefferson, in Festus, MO. The physicians, including Regional Dean Dr. Karthik Iyer, have provided excellent mentorship to our LECOM students, and these publications reflect everyone’s hard work. Bravo!

Greetings, everybody! My name is Zack Barile, and I am a current OMS3 at LECOM Erie! I wanted to share my experience being one of SAMSHA’s Summer Scholars as part of the American Psychiatric Association’s collaboration initiative. Much of what went into my application essay was experience gained right here in Erie – specifically, my experience in the NeuroPsych Club! Getting an all-expenses-paid trip to visit the APA’s national conference was the cherry on top of what ended up being an incredible networking experience. It was truly awesome representing LECOM and D.O.s in general at the conference, and I forged lasting relationships with leading figures in the field. Anything you set your mind to is possible here at LECOM!

We welcomed bright high school and undergraduate students to campus for a closer look at careers in the medical field. From getting a taste of our high-tech simulation labs to learning how to close a wound in our suturing clinic, it was a day filled with hands-on discovery.

We hosted the 29th annual symposium, where students could present on the projects they developed to serve the elderly, intellectually and behaviorally challenged, and victims of domestic violence, among others.

ACOS brings Trauma Life Support Training to LECOM Erie

Three days of lectures and hands-on training were featured at the recent Trauma Life Support Conference held by the Medical Student Section of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) at LECOM Erie.

Airway skills, hemorrhage control, chest trauma intervention, spine assessment, helmet removal, and splinting were among the hands-on training experiences at the conference.

Lectures included topics on trauma assessment, burns, extremity trauma, pediatric and pregnancy trauma.

A huge thank you to LECOM’s Dr. Risavi and the International Trauma Life Support team for an unforgettable three days of hands-on learning and insight!

In my first couple of years at LECOM, two of my peers and I worked on a research project focused on ovarian and cervical cancers. Our study investigated how these cancers respond to UV radiation in the hope of serving as a baseline for further exploration into the management of cancer. Ovarian and cervical cancers are significant health concerns for women, and we hope that research such as ours can guide treatment methods to make these cancers less deadly. We presented our poster at the Erie Research Day and came in second place! Research is a great opportunity to work with peers on something you are passionate about, while also learning further about the topic.

New School of Dental Medicine faculty member Dr. Usman Sunusi traveled from Ohio to visit the LECOM Erie campus! Next stop: LECOM Bradenton to join the dental faculty as Assistant Professor of Biochemistry.
Dr. Silvia Ferretti, Provost, Senior Vice President, and Dean of Academic Affairs, and Dr. Regan Shabloski, Assistant Dean of Plans, Operations, Training, and Safety, gave Dr. Sunusi a tour of the Erie main campus before he went on to tour the School of Dental Medicine.

Hello! I am Isabelle Ngo, an incoming D1 at the LECOM School of Dental Medicine. I was born and raised in Northern Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Biology.
What drew me to LECOM was its emphasis on early clinical exposure and the supportive, close-knit learning community — I’m so excited to grow both personally and professionally here! In my free time, I love dancing, exploring new cafes, and finding peaceful moments through creative projects like vlogging. I’m so excited to be on this journey and can’t wait to meet everyone!

Getting that first interview… A milestone! ERAS interview season begins in October, shortly after applications are submitted in September. Currently, most interviews are still conducted virtually. The first interview is a great milestone as an MS4 and represents the next step to becoming a physician. Everything counts during an interview – including lighting and your background! Receiving my first interview invitation was one of the most special moments of my journey so far.
