Stories from the Scholars: Noor Mutawe on Service, Compassion, and Education

I'm grateful for the opportunity to take part in the Resources for Human Development Outreach in DeFuniak Springs, FL — a truly inspiring day focused on providing dental care and education for adults with special needs.
Some of the participants were our very own patients, and it was so rewarding to see them confidently answer trivia questions about the oral health topics we’ve been teaching them chairside. Moments like that are such a reminder of how meaningful patient education truly is.
LECOM’s focus on community service and compassionate care continues to shape the kind of clinician I strive to become. Each outreach reminds me that dentistry is about so much more than teeth — it’s about connection, understanding, and empowering every patient to take pride in their smile.

LECOM life in Erie

Enjoyed a beautiful Erie sunset evening doing a wellness walk with a lot of LECOM Erie Students! My partner and I love going to Presque Isle to relax and recharge after busy weeks. We will definitely miss these sunsets when we go off for residency.

More than 30 Dental School students, 2 alumni, and 3 faculty members volunteered for a recent Super Smile Saturday outreach event at the Defuniak Springs Dental Clinic. LECOM School of Dental Medicine students helped care for 54 patients, completing 50 prophys and 45 sealants. Excellent work!

An Amazing Journey since the White Coat Ceremony!

When this photo was taken during the Dental White Coat Ceremony in my D1 year, I had no idea just how much I would learn and grow in such a short time. The challenges, the hands-on experiences, and the people I’ve met along the way have each played a part in shaping me into the clinician I’m becoming. Dental school has pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best ways, and I’m truly grateful for every lesson learned so far. Excited to keep growing, learning, and building a career in this profession!

Scholar Spotlight: Lauren Nguyen

The independence that comes with our PBL setup has honestly taught me so much about myself—not just as a student, but as a future physician. Learning to guide my own studies has shown me that I’m far more capable and self-disciplined than I ever gave myself credit for. I’ve had to experiment with different study methods, figure out what truly helps concepts click, and learn how to stay motivated even when no one’s setting the pace for me. That process has made my education feel personal, intentional, and meaningful. It’s helped me build confidence, take ownership of my growth, and reignite a genuine excitement for learning that goes beyond just passing exams.

75 days until the LECOM Suncoast Classic

We’re tee-ing up for the LECOM Suncoast Classic, scheduled for April 2 – 5, and held at the Lakewood National Golf Club, named the “Host Facility of the Year” on the PGA’s Korn Ferry Tour.

Best of all, the tournament raises money to benefit the LECOM Student Scholarship Fund.

From the hustle of NYC to the scenic views of Upstate New York!

We sat down with a student who chose LECOM at Elmira specifically for our Problem-Based Learning (PBL) pathway and the chance to stay in-state. They shared that PBL "emphasizes the clinical side of learning" in a unique way that goes beyond the lecture hall, but the best part might just be the people.
