The LECOM Bradenton's Bridging Academia Outreach Program for high schoolers offers an excellent opportunity for students to explore higher education concepts and research in a collaborative environment. By engaging with university faculty like Dr. Ningning Yang and Dr. Sweat Andrews, students are exposed to advanced topics in pharmacy, medicine, and academic research. The program fosters an understanding of scholarly literature and academic rigor, guiding students toward their future academic goals.

The mentorship provided by PharmD candidates Carrie Bray, Medina Ibisevic, and Steven Mispilkin. The LECOM students offer high school participants personalized support, helping them navigate the complex world of higher education and research. This initiative serves as a bridge, empowering students to transition from secondary school to the demands of university life while honing critical thinking and intellectual curiosity.

Happy Black History Month! Today we will continue honor black osteopathic physicians that paved the way for many to come, Ethel D. Allen, DO First African American councilwoman in Philadelphia

Born in Philadelphia in 1929, Ethel D. Allen, DO, knew she loved medicine from the age of 5. After graduating from the all-Black West Virginia State College, she went through seven application cycles before finally being accepted into medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy (now the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine).

When Dr. Allen committed to practicing community medicine, she committed to serving the poorest and most disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Throughout all of this, she faced rampant sexism and racism for being a Black female physician. None of this stopped her from founding the Community Committee on Medical School Admissions, which provided the platform for her work to increase the admission rates of Black medical school applicants.

It also didn’t stop her from becoming the first African American councilwoman elected to an at-large seat on the Philadelphia City Council.

Happy Black History Month!

Today we hear student doctor Leslie speak on what an important impact Dr. Martin Luther King JR had on her and many other people.

As we reflect on the legacy of MLK, we often focus on the monumental achievements that shape our world today. But we must also remember that meaningful change begins in the small, everyday actions that strengthen not only the communities around us but also those we might not immediately understand or connect with.

Unity is built in the little things—in making others feel included or even saying hello to those we might otherwise overlook. As osteopathic physicians, we are uniquely positioned to help unify and uplift communities. It challenges us to step outside our comfort zones and approach others with empathy, curiosity, and an open heart. We should strive to embody his spirit—not just in grand gestures, but in the small, powerful ways that build bridges and bring us closer together.

Happy Black History Month! Today we will honor an osteopathic physicians that paved the way for many to come. Dr. Meta L. Christy, a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, is the world's first African-American osteopathic physician. After graduation, Dr. Christy returned to Kokomo, Indiana, living with her mother and setting up private practice in their home. She was one of three osteopaths in a city with 46 “physicians and surgeons.”

LECOM Seton Hill SOMA Gives Back!

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our recent on-campus food drive for the Westmoreland Food Bank! Thanks to your generosity and support, we successfully collected 183 pounds of food to help local families in need.

We are incredibly proud of our LECOM Seton Hill SOMA community for coming together to make a meaningful impact. Every donation, big or small, helps fight food insecurity and brings hope to those in need.

The School of Dental Medicine would like to welcome Bobby Borges and Brendan McCaffery to the School of Dental Medicine. Bobby has been appointed as the procurement supervisor and Brendan has been appointed as dispensary staff. Bobby and Brendan worked together at Best Buy from 2015-2021. They also were standardized patients at LECOM College of Medicine and they bring a great synergy to the School of Dental Medicine. Bobby reflects: “He (Brendan) was my right-hand man and one of my best leaders. He decided he wanted to try something new, and I recommended he become a standardized patient with me during last year next door. Once I started this position, I thought he would be great at any position here in a greater role. So far, it has worked out great.

Dr. Michael Silveus joins LECOM School of Dental Medicine simulation clinic faculty as an Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Silveus retired from clinical activity in 2017 after more than 31 years in private practice. He passionately loved his patients and the technological advances in dentistry. Incorporating CEREC and Invisalign early on into his practice allowed him to give his patients the most current dentistry possible. Dr. Silveus graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry and earned his M.A. in Philosophy and Ethics at Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Silveus has taught at Detroit Mercy Dental School and Georgetown University School of Dentistry and NOVA Southeastern College of Dental Medicine. In his free time, Dr. Silveus loves rowing, traveling the world, entertaining, theatre, and serving as a spiritual director. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Silveus for joining the LECOM SDM family.

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine extends its hearty congratulations to third-year pharmacy student, Caroline Semelsberger, who successfully presented a poster entitled, 'Cytokine Transcriptional Signatures Inform Valacyclovir Repositioning in Long-Term COVID-19', at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Meeting. The Conference was held from December 8-12, 2024, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Caroline performed her research under the guidance of Molinda Kearns, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology & Medicinal Chemistry.

Last week was one for the books as we officially welcomed the new Dean of the School of Podiatric Medicine!

Surrounded by colleagues, students, and a shared sense of excitement, we celebrated the beginning of a new chapter for our school.

Our new Dean brings a vision of excellence, innovation, and dedication to shaping the future of podiatric medicine. From heartfelt conversations to inspiring speeches, it’s clear that the road ahead is bright under their leadership.

New Dean at LECOM School of Podiatric Medicine Puts Best Foot Forward

As the eleventh podiatric medical school in the United States, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Podiatric Medicine began offering a four-year program in July of 2023 at the LECOM main campus in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The scholars undertake their education and training in state-of-the-art classrooms housed within the LECOM West Building on the Main Campus, where 13,000 square feet of dedicated space provides optimum room for in-depth learning.

Now assisting the School in putting its best foot forward is its new Dean, Duane J. Ehredt, Jr., DPM, FACFAS, who will be leading the important educational charge.

Dr. Ehredt hails from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, in Independence, Ohio where he served previously as Associate Professor, Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery and Biomechanics.
Now, as a Clinical Professor and Dean of the School of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Ehredt will be addressing the growing need for podiatric doctors throughout the United States as LECOM remains strongly committed to meeting this national healthcare need through the offerings of this school.

Dr. Ehredt holds admissions privileges at a host of renowned hospitals, including the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University Hospitals of Cleveland, and an array of other affiliations.He is an active United States Navy Reservist and he has a depth of military medical training and experience.

Dr. Ehredt recognizes that LECOM is uniquely positioned to provide podiatric students the opportunity to be trained alongside medical students and to receive extensive clinical learning within the regional academic health system.

Podiatric students receive much of the same training as osteopathic medical students while also undertaking studies specific to the podiatric physician. This focused teaching opportunity better prepares graduates for entrance into podiatric residency programs. LECOM School of Dental Medicine recently attended a day at Children's First head Start to promote and teach dental wellbeing. Early Head Start serves pregnant mothers and infants and toddlers, birth to three years old. This program promotes healthy prenatal outcomes and enhances the development of infants and toddlers

Head Start helps children learn the cognitive, social, and emotional skills they need for success in Kindergarten and beyond.

Head Start services are for families who live at or below the Federal Poverty Level. Families may still be eligible for their services based on other criteria, such as a child with a diagnosed disability. Head Start services are offered at no cost to eligible families
