Dr. Teresa Hubka, President of the American Osteopathic Association, and Kathleen Creason, AOA CEO, visited LECOM at Seton Hill on the first day of National Osteopathic Medicine Week, April 14. The day included breakfast with faculty and administration, a tour of LECOM facilities, and the president’s address to 1st- and 2nd – year medical students, which was followed by lunch and a meet-and-greet with students.

Fun Fact: LECOM’s Associate Dean of Clinical Education Dr. Michael Rowane and Dr. Hubka are longtime friends from their days at Des Moines University together!

💙 Our LECOM at Elmira students volunteered at the Neighborhood Transformation Center in downtown Elmira, NY. They provided free blood‑pressure screenings, pulse checks, hygiene kits, and wound‑care supplies, and—thanks to the Central New York Area Health Education Center (@CNYAHEC)—distributed Narcan and Deterra Drug Deactivation Kits.

🩺 We look forward to hosting many more drop‑in service days at the Neighborhood Transformation Center as part of our ongoing mission to support the mind, body, and spirit of our most at‑risk neighbors.

Introducing Noah and Rebekah Berkebile, OMS-3s at LECOM Seton Hill, who married last year after taking the boards. While on rotations, Noah has discovered a love for surgery, and Rebekah wants to pursue med/peds.
Noah’s advice: Your attendings are a wonderful resource with years of experience and judgment in their respective fields. You will learn so much by asking questions that draw on this knowledge. Research the fundamentals on your own and develop deeper questions to ask the attending so you can grow through a discussion.
Rebekah’s advice: Always be kind to the staff wherever you are and offer to help however you can. Not only will this keep you grounded in human decency, but it will often benefit you as well. And from one of her attendings, “If you are in the way as a medical student, then that means you are trying.”

“I am currently a second-year medical student at LECOM - Seton Hill and have had the privilege of serving as the outgoing president of our chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS). ACOS is a national organization that supports thousands of surgeons, residents, and students, providing valuable resources and guidance at every stage of their surgical careers.

This January, I was honored to be named the national ACOS Student Doctor of the Month. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our club at LECOM and to help foster a greater understanding of surgery among my peers. I hope that our chapter continues to inspire and educate future surgeons, encouraging more students to pursue this rewarding field alongside me.”

Congratulations to LECOM-Bradenton Student Doctor Charvi Sunkara (Class of 2026) for presenting a poster “Litchi as Medicine: A Critical Analysis of Anticancer Potential” at the Residents and Medical Students poster competition during a meeting of the Florida Chapter of American College of Physicians (ACP), Orlando, FL, March 15, 2025. The team, comprised of other students Olivia Johnson, OMS3; Joachim Kavalakatt, OMS3; Shweta S. Zinzuwadia, OMS3; and Taylor E. Collignon, OMS4, conducted this research study under the mentorship of Anupam Bishayee, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Director of Research, LECOM-Bradenton.

Congratulations also to LECOM-Bradenton Student Doctor Mariam Tadros, OMS4, for presenting a poster “From Wheelchair Bound to Working: A Case Study of Intravenous Ketamine Infusions in Treating Stiff Person Syndrome” during the annual meeting of the Association of Academic Physiatrists (Physiatry ’25), Phoenix, AZ, February 25-March 1, 2025.

Dr. Michael Rowane, Associate Dean of Clinical Education at LECOM Erie, is married to Dr. Barbara Gorican Rowane, who is Slovenian. This Easter, Dr. Rowane donned the Slovenian nos̆a, the traditional costume of Slovenia, as they joined with the community in Cleveland, Ohio, to celebrate Easter Mass at St. Mary’s of the Assumption. The community considers him an ‘honorary Slovenian.’
Dr. Barbara Rowane has been a preceptor for LECOM students for 20 years. Dr. Michael and Dr. Barbara have 5 daughters, who are all dual citizens of the U.S. and Slovenia.

The LECOM Erie Surgery and Orthopedics clubs recently welcomed Dr. Anthony Ferretti, Dr. Alec Grossman, and Dr. Stepan Shumyak from the Orthopedic Surgery Department at LECOM Medical Center to lead the Annual Casting Clinic. After a lecture on the basics of casting and splinting earlier in the day, students experienced a hands-on application of all they had learned. Thanks to Alyssa Zehner, LECOM chapter president of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons – Medical Student Section for sending pictures of the whole cast!

LECOM Erie Student Doctor Maggie Kesterson will be recognized by the American Heart Association at its Erie Heart Ball this Saturday, May 17, 2025.
At this year’s American College of Cardiology Conference Scientific Session, Maggie presented a rare vascular case involving congenital absence of the left common carotid artery – a condition documented in fewer than 100 cases worldwide. This anomaly alters the typical vascular architecture, potentially complicating stroke evaluation, imaging interpretation, and endovascular procedures.
Maggie’s scholarly achievement reflects one of the pillars upon which LECOM’s mission is built – Research.

This is from the last day of my first clinical rotation at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. After two years in the classroom, starting rotations and truly being able to help patients reminded me why I’ve always wanted to be a doctor. I can work with and learn from providers, residents, and other medical students. Clinical rotations have been awesome, and I look forward to learning and helping our patients every day.
