Empowering the Next Generation! Meet Russell McElveen, D.O., LECOM Alumnus and cardiothoracic surgeon at Mercy Southeast in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Dr. McElveen says that one of the highlights of his distinguished career is now having LECOM students rotate on his service. LECOM and Mercy recently began their partnership, and Dr. McElveen tries to give students full exposure to cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery.
As we celebrate Black History Month, Dr. McElveen says the people he is most moved by are his parents – his first teachers. He also recalls attending a Summer Scholars program in Ohio, where he was exposed to Osteopathic Medicine, and it forever changed him. Spending that summer with other minority students, he found community among his peers as they pushed and encouraged each other – and still do to this day. It was at that time that he also met Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee, the first African-American woman to be the dean of a school of medicine.
Borrowing from his own journey, Dr. McElveen started the Gateway to Medicine pipeline program that’s dedicated to supporting students underrepresented in medicine by providing mentorship, resources, and opportunities to guide them to medical school.
“I do for these young people what others have done for me,” Dr. McElveen says, “I did not get to where I am alone.” Noting advice he received from LECOM’s Dr. Silvia Ferretti, he recalls her words: In life, there are no failures, just life lessons learned.
Dr. McElveen shares his inspiring words for today’s medical students. “The future is limitless for the next generation. Always trust and believe in yourself and do not wait for others to validate who you are, because the validation may never come. Always bet on yourself and always be kind and treat others and your patients the way you would want to be treated.”

Why MMS?

I chose the Master of Medical Science program to gain the knowledge and confidence needed in the basic medical sciences to succeed throughout medical school.
I cannot recommend this program enough for students seeking expert faculty, interesting lectures, and study strategies needed for medical school.

Congratulations to Student Doctor Andrew Toader on being named the LECOM–Erie Student Researcher of the Year!
Andrew is a third-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine who has led multiple research projects throughout his medical school training. His work includes designing and investigating the efficacy of a novel device that monitors tremors to provide real-time feedback to neurosurgeons treating patients with MRI-guided focused ultrasound. He has also applied optical imaging techniques to study neuronal oxygen metabolism and hemodynamic response to neuronal stimulation, further exploring the pathophysiology of disease states such as Alzheimer’s disease and cardiac arrest.
Selected by a committee of faculty and peers, Andrew was recognized for his dedication to research, his leadership in osteopathic research, and his embodiment of osteopathic philosophy. He will go on to represent LECOM–Erie in consideration for the national Student Researcher of the Year award.

More Pittsburgh.

The education and opportunities at LECOM have allowed me to create a thorough residency application that will open many doors for my future career. I was lucky enough to be part of various research projects and clubs, including having leadership positions in two clubs. I was also a student mentor, which helped me realize that I really enjoy teaching and supporting others. I am very grateful for all the opportunities to succeed that LECOM has provided me.

A Win-Win! A new partnership in the area will add security measures at LECOM Health Corry Memorial Hospital, while also contributing to the safety of the entire community.
The hospital announced on Wednesday it will help fund a Corry City Police officer who, in addition to joining the force, will regularly patrol the CMH campus, conduct safety checks with staff, and promptly respond to all calls from the hospital.
