A note from Student Doctor Luis Alvarez, the winner of the Student Researcher of the Year for the 2024-25 school term!

As President of the Student Research Association at LECOM Bradenton, I focused on making research more accessible and less intimidating for my peers through multiple projects. Firstly, I provided practical guidance on navigating the research process through quarterly conference room presentations. These teaching sessions helped me play an integral role in the creation of the LECOM Bradenton Research Internship Program. The program is now a staple of LECOM research that features faculty-led lectures, a standardized curriculum, and my presentation, "The Art of Writing a Manuscript." This annual program equips 20 osteopathic medical students each year with the skills to excel in research. A survey study is now underway to evaluate the programs' impact in addressing the challenges a medical student might face in research.

I began my research journey at the Byrd Alzheimer's Institute as a lead research technician. My role involved performing advanced wet lab techniques such as rodent stereotaxic brain surgery which I continued into my first year of medical school. My research focused on neuroscience, and I have published manuscripts on Alzheimer’s disease, Angelman Syndrome, and Levetiracetam. At LECOM, my curiosity about a unique presentation of hyperostosis frontalis interna in the cadaver lab led to two publications on the condition. My additional published works include Type IV hiatal hernias, Pancreatitis and apple cider vinegar, and cranial rhythmic impulse. My work has been presented at multiple national and local conferences including the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), Florida Medical Association, and LECOM Research Day. To date, I have seven peer-reviewed publications (five as first author), ten manuscripts drafted or published, and twelve posters presented, including first- and second-place poster competition wins stemming from my research internship program study and other studies.

The LECOM Oncology Club before the holidays organized a thoughtful and impactful donation drive aimed at supporting the snack cart at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. This initiative was designed to provide children undergoing treatment, as well as their families, with convenient access to snacks and small comfort items during their stay. By collecting and donating a variety of nutritious and enjoyable snacks, the club demonstrated their commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of young patients and creating a supportive environment during a challenging time. This act of kindness reflects the club’s dedication to community service and their compassion for those in need.

LECOM SDM held an annual Loupes Fair. The event was very successful and allowed our students and faculty the opportunity to purchase new loupes or upgrade their existing loupes. The magnification industry was represented well with 10 companies in attendance. Drs. Choi, Meese, Perez and Slipak were present during the event to provide guidance to the students. Many thanks also go to the D2 student volunteers who helped the vendors set up and also provided guidance to the D1 students looking for magnification.

Throughout the decades, the parallel between medical practice and military service has been found at the heart of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM); advanced unflinchingly through a commitment to scholarship, dedication, intense discipline, and selfless service.

On June 21, 2024, Major Andrew Glenn, D.O. (LECOM Class of 2018) graduated from the Occupational Medicine Residency Program at the Department of Aviation Medicine, U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence, at Fort Novosel, AL.

Having also recently completed the Aerospace Medicine Residency, Major Glenn will serve as the Brigade Flight Surgeon with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY.

He is replacing Major Chris Grace, D.O. (LECOM Class of 2014). Major Grace arrived at Fort Novosel to take the position of Flight Surgeon Course Director, replacing Lieutenant Colonel Erik Johnson, D.O. (LECOM Class of 2011).

Lieutenant Colonel Johnson is now the Command Flight Surgeon for the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Novosel. All three officers serve as Flight Surgeons in the U.S. Army, specializing in Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Medicine.

LECOM has a strong history of preparing United States military personnel in their medical education to serve with excellence. Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Medicine are specialties under the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Student and staff volunteers from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) gathered on November 12, 2024 to support the Salute to Service Baby Shower Veterans Day event presented by LECOM as the College showered five mothers who currently serve in the United States Armed Forces.

The Baby Shower tribute event took place at the Toyota Club at the Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. A lovely lunch and a host of activities were offered by LECOM, including a baby photo contest, bracelet and bouquet-making events, and relaxing message chairs and facials for the mothers.

Volunteers distributed advice cards for serving mothers and arranged the distribution of favors to those in attendance. The serving moms received LECOM and Buffalo Bills co-branded blankets and diaper bags. The event proved to be a terrific success and it palpably underscored the important sacrifice that mothers make while serving the nation.

LECOM strenuously supports the men and women in uniform – and the Salute to Service Baby Shower tribute to moms who serve is yet another way in which LECOM recognizes the powerful purpose of those who serve and sacrifice for America.

Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Civilian Institution Programs Medical Fellow, Major Viviana De Assis, DO, was awarded the 2023 Gottesfeld-Hohler Benacerraf Visiting Ultrasound
Fellowship. The 2014 Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) graduate is one of only two recipients of this prestigious award in the United States.

The Fellowship, named in honor of Dr. Beryl Rica Benacerraf, a pioneer in the field of obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound, expands the ultrasound training of physicians who are dedicated to high quality imaging in women’s healthcare. The Fellowship will enable de Assis to further her education in fetal echocardiography.

A collaborative undertaking involving Mercy Southeast, Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) will welcome medical students to Southeast Missouri and transform Mercy Hospital Southeast into a teaching hospital. Mercy Southeast and Mercy Stoddard will host clinical rotations for LECOM scholars in an upcoming school year.

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) extends its hearty congratulations to fourth-year medical student, Taylor E. Collignon, who successfully presented a poster entitled, Cancer Prevention with Nutritional Science: Addressing the Gap in Clinical Medicine, at the Annual Conference of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. The Conference was held from October 27-30, 2024 in Orlando, Florida.

Taylor performed her research under the guidance of Anupam Bishayee, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Director of Research, LECOM-Bradenton.

LECOM is a proud partner of the Cleveland Browns and recently partnered with the Browns to donate $5,000 to Cleveland MUNY Football Leagues for the purchase of AEDs. Third-year Pharmacy student Sareen Mustafa and LECOM VP of Marketing and Communications Matt Bresee represented LECOM at the ceremony that took place at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus. Browns cornerback Denzel Ward hosted players and coaches from Cleveland MUNY for a game of flag football followed by a pizza party with CHOMPS the mascot.

SDM’s Preston Lutz, Class of 2027, received a grant to attend the SPEA (Student Professionalism and Ethics Association) Annual Meeting, in New Orleans. This was in an effort to establish a Chapter here at LECOM/SDM and the first of any dental school in Florida. SPEA is a student organization sponsored by the American College of Dentists, and, along with the Florida Section of the College, provided the $1000.00 grant.

Preston stated that the 2024 SPEA annual conference in New Orleans was an amazing experience from start to finish.

"Our Keynote speaker, Dr. Brett Kessler (ADA President Elect), gave a presentation on the state of dentistry. Specifically touching on how dental health has wide impacts on overall systemic health and the discrepancy between essential and non-essential care in the eyes of insurance. The example he used was that a hip replacement is considered essential, but a dental implant is not.

Breakout groups on how to grow a SPEA chapter, alternative careers in dentistry, and Imposter Syndrome. Alternative careers ranging from physically building dental practices to a dentist who had to retire due to a back injury starting a business buying and selling dental practices. The discussion on Imposter Syndrome was a big one for me. I often struggle to reconcile if I truly am living up to the expectations of my past self”.

I would describe my experience at the SPEA annual convention as overwhelmingly positive. I am extremely excited to start growing a chapter of SPEA at LECOM and cannot wait for next year’s annual conference in Washington DC."

At LECOM Bradenton, members from the Senior Living Center visited the School of Dental Medicine as apart of our LIGHT program. This program educates and trains students on geriatric sensitivity and how to work with older adults. Occupational and physical therapists taught students how to move from wheelchair to dental chair using sliding boards and pivot boards transfers, discuss diseases and transitions of older adults and ways to manage that in their practice for patients with cognitive, hearing, vision and dexterity deficits. The goal is for students to leave with understanding, sensitivity and empathy to older adults they will care for.
