Service Above Self: LECOM Erie Students are Above and Beyond
We are beyond proud to celebrate the work of our students during this year’s Bridging the Gaps community health internship program! We hosted the 29th annual symposium, where students could present on the projects they developed to serve the elderly, intellectually and behaviorally challenged, and victims of domestic violence, among others.
These hard-working, compassionate future physicians are at the heart of the LECOM mission.

ACOS brings Trauma Life Support Training to LECOM Erie

Three days of lectures and hands-on training were featured at the recent Trauma Life Support Conference held by the Medical Student Section of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) at LECOM Erie.

Airway skills, hemorrhage control, chest trauma intervention, spine assessment, helmet removal, and splinting were among the hands-on training experiences at the conference.

Lectures included topics on trauma assessment, burns, extremity trauma, pediatric and pregnancy trauma.

A huge thank you to LECOM’s Dr. Risavi and the International Trauma Life Support team for an unforgettable three days of hands-on learning and insight!

In my first couple of years at LECOM, two of my peers and I worked on a research project focused on ovarian and cervical cancers. Our study investigated how these cancers respond to UV radiation in the hope of serving as a baseline for further exploration into the management of cancer. Ovarian and cervical cancers are significant health concerns for women, and we hope that research such as ours can guide treatment methods to make these cancers less deadly. We presented our poster at the Erie Research Day and came in second place! Research is a great opportunity to work with peers on something you are passionate about, while also learning further about the topic.

New School of Dental Medicine faculty member Dr. Usman Sunusi traveled from Ohio to visit the LECOM Erie campus! Next stop: LECOM Bradenton to join the dental faculty as Assistant Professor of Biochemistry.
Dr. Silvia Ferretti, Provost, Senior Vice President, and Dean of Academic Affairs, and Dr. Regan Shabloski, Assistant Dean of Plans, Operations, Training, and Safety, gave Dr. Sunusi a tour of the Erie main campus before he went on to tour the School of Dental Medicine.

Hello! I am Isabelle Ngo, an incoming D1 at the LECOM School of Dental Medicine. I was born and raised in Northern Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Biology.
What drew me to LECOM was its emphasis on early clinical exposure and the supportive, close-knit learning community — I’m so excited to grow both personally and professionally here! In my free time, I love dancing, exploring new cafes, and finding peaceful moments through creative projects like vlogging. I’m so excited to be on this journey and can’t wait to meet everyone!

Getting that first interview… A milestone! ERAS interview season begins in October, shortly after applications are submitted in September. Currently, most interviews are still conducted virtually. The first interview is a great milestone as an MS4 and represents the next step to becoming a physician. Everything counts during an interview – including lighting and your background! Receiving my first interview invitation was one of the most special moments of my journey so far.

Bootcamp week is all about building a strong foundation, meeting future colleagues, and preparing for the incredible journey of medical school. The energy on campus was fantastic!

“It’s not just about academics—it’s about adapting, connecting, and thriving.” Dr. Dunbar had a chance to share what our incoming students experience during Bootcamp—an intense yet empowering week designed to build the foundation for success at LECOM at Elmira.

Our faculty and second-year students are on hand all week to offer invaluable advice, answer questions, and share their tips for success. At LECOM, you're never on this journey alone.

LECOM Erie Medical Students Help Bridge the Gaps!
Our hats off to second-year medical students Anna Betler and Luke Geiger, who are interns at Parkside Regency at South Shore through the Bridging the Gaps program. They spent the last seven weeks orchestrating and participating in events with the residents at the Regency. They created an oral health-themed BINGO game to teach residents about the importance of lifelong oral hygiene.
Bridging the Gaps is a community service internship that partners LECOM medical students with their local community. Student interns develop and implement health-related projects to meet the unique needs of their community site.
