Biography

Dr. Shumaila Tunio, M.Sc., MBA, Ph.D., is the Assistant Director of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Professor at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), Jacksonville campus. She is an accomplished medical educator, researcher, and academic leader with over 20 years of experience in microbiology, immunology, infectious diseases, and medical education.

Prior to joining LECOM, Dr. Tunio served as Professor at the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM), where she directed multiple courses, mentored faculty, and held several key leadership roles. She served as Chair of Faculty Congress and contributed to multiple institutional committees, including Admissions, Research, Educational Policy and Curriculum, and Instructional Resources Committees, in both chair and vice-chair capacities.

Dr. Tunio earned her Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology from Kuwait University and an MBA from the University of Pikeville. She completed postdoctoral training at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Her research focuses on medical education and tuberculosis, and she has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

She is a National Faculty member for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), a Fulbright Specialist, and a former mentor in the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Future Leaders Mentoring Fellowship.

Throughout her career, Dr. Tunio has received numerous honors recognizing excellence in teaching, research, and leadership, including the KYCOM Student Government Association Best-Organized Lectures Award, the KYCOM Distinguished Faculty Research Award, and the KYCOM Excellence in Didactic Teaching Award. She has also completed executive leadership training through the Appalachian College Association Leadership Institute and Patton Leadership Institute, further strengthening her expertise in academic leadership and higher education administration.

She is passionate about student success, faculty development, and collaborative learning.
