About Colleen Cole-Jeffrey

Dr. Colleen Cole-Jeffrey earned her Master of Science in Cellular & Molecular Biology from the University of Notre Dame and her PhD in Physiology from the University of Florida. She previously researched the roles of gut microbiota and the renin-angiotensin system in cardiovascular disease and the subsequent identification of drug targets for cardiopulmonary disease therapy.

As a researcher and an educator, Dr. Cole-Jeffrey’s work at LECOM focuses on improvement of medical student learning in the classroom. She became interested in this topic after observing medical students struggle to retain the volume of material they are responsible for learning. In her research, she implements various active learning strategies in a large classroom setting and analyzes how each strategy affects the education of students. Current projects include the role of metacognition in learning and a collaboration with Dr. Jack Lee on the development and assessment of a novel learning strategy, Peer Retrieval Practice.
