About Dr. Octavia Flanagan, PhD, WHNP-BC

Dr. Flanagan earned her MSN-WHNP and PhD in Nursing at the University of North Carolina School of Nursing. She has extensive research experience in the field with incarcerated females at the Raleigh Maximum Security Prison for Women in NC studying HIV prevention, empowerment, and resiliency in female inmates. Additionally she has had over 30 years of experience as a Nationally Board-Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, specializing in primary care and OB-GYN needs of women of all ages. At LECOM, Dr. Flanagan mentors and leads students in multiple content areas of research including work with marginalized populations, behavioral health research, and a variety of gynecological topics during the reproductive and postmenopausal periods.
Most current research efforts emphasize:
- Women’s Health concerns in women of color, and in socially disadvantaged populations.
- Traditional and current health beliefs regarding mental health illness and management in South Asian populations.
- Stress and coping in Osteopathic Medical Students in pre-clinical and clinical years of education.
Dr. Flanagan is currently involved in active research and submissions for publication with 11 OMS1 student groups, 7 OMS 2 groups, and 9 OMS 3 and 4 students at LECOM Elmira and Erie campuses.
