Ringing in the Lunar New Year: LECOM APAMSA – Community, Culture, and Celebration

On February 16, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) students gathered in celebration of the Lunar New Year at the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association, (APAMSA) annual holiday event – an evening filled with vibrant conversation, comforting food, and a welcome pause from the rigors of academic life.  The event brought together medical and pre-medical students for a night centered upon community, culture, and connection.

Hosted by the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) and its Mentor, Dr. Anupam Bishayee, the celebration reflected the organizational mission of fostering unity and service.

APAMSA is a national organization of medical and pre-medical students committed to addressing the unique health challenges of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.  Events like the Lunar New Year gathering serve as an important reminder that building strong communities begins with meaningful relationships.

The evening began with a shared dinner, where students enjoyed an array of dishes while catching up with old friends and meeting new people.

Laughter echoed across the room as conversations flowed easily; an  energized change of pace from hours spent in study and in preparation for exams.  For many, the event offered not only a cultural celebration, but also a chance to recharge alongside peers who share similar goals and experiences.

Following the dinner, the energy in the room shifted as five brave participants took on the event highlight:  that of a spicy ramen eating challenge.

Bowls of steaming noodles were placed before the competitors, and cheers erupted as each participant raced to finish first.  The challenge brought playful competition and plenty of suspense, with onlookers enthusiastically encouraging their friends.  In the end, one determined student claimed the prize, but everyone walked away having been entertained.

Indeed, the Lunar New Year celebration offered a joyful and welcome moment to celebrate together.
