Wonder is the beginning of wisdom. ~Socrates
Let’s Go Doling in the Clouds
Do you remember lying on the grass on a warm summer day, gazing up at the clouds, seeing birds, dogs, and all sorts of unnamed creatures?
Perhaps you recall pointing them out to friends who had to find them: “I see a cat! I see an airplane!” This tendency, known as Pareidolia, is the experience of seeing one image in another. If you ever have spied an elephant in a cloud, found a rock that looked like a heart, or felt the eyes of an old elf looking at you from the bark of a tree, you have experienced it. You have been “pareidoling,” or “doling,” for short.
Dr. Mark Kauffman, Dean of Academic Affairs at LECOM Bradenton, recently created this children’s photobook, designed to encourage youthful imagination. Each book is equipped with clear sheets and an erasable marker. Upon opening the book, a natural cloud formation is revealed – not an artificial intelligence-generated image – and a clue to the treasures hidden within its form is set forth. Use the clue, then search the photo to find the hidden treasures. Using the clear sheet and outlining the object helps youngsters develop fine motor skills. Answers are revealed in the book and the viewer may even find other treasures hidden in the clouds.
It’s time to put away the videos, electronic games, and cell phones and to bolster imaginations, encourage creativity, and let the magic flow. Let’s go doling!
The History and Physical Examination Workbook: A Case-Based Approach
During a typical office visit, a provider has approximately fifteen minutes to interview, examine, diagnose, and treat each patient. The History and Physical Examination Workbook: A Case-Based Approach, is a must-have resource for developing these skills. Providing clinical practice in the art of performing H&Ps through the use of flow models, this workbook encourages students to avoid memorization and use common sense to develop a logical approach to patients’ chief complaints by allowing them to partner as patient and provider.
This clinical workbook is intended to accompany History and Physical Examination texts such as History and Physical Examination: A Common Sense Approach, to speed orientation in performing history and physical examinations.
Completing the workbook in entirety will help prepare students of medicine for clinical rotations and patient encounters moving from observer to provider.
LECOM lauds the distinctive and extraordinary attainments of Dr. Mark Kauffman, a leader who serves as an exemplar of the constant and ready character that keeps LECOM ever in the vanguard of first-rate healthcare education.
