LECOM Almuna, Brittney DiBella, D.O., Receives Prestigious Award

Brittney DiBella, D.O.The fast pace and critical importance of an emergency room physician, one who is saving lives, is evidenced on a daily basis.

It seems most fitting then, that the New York American College of Emergency Physicians recently honored the unsung heroes of healthcare at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital.

Brittney DiBella, D.O., a Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) 2012 graduate and night staff physician at Mount Sinai South Nassau Emergency Department, has been named a recipient of the 2023 Emergency Medicine Unsung Hero Award.

The Award pays tribute to those selfless and dedicated individuals who are profoundly committed to the mission of the Emergency Department, those who demonstrate steadfast support of colleagues, coworkers, and most importantly, the patients.

“Dr. DiBella will assist any patient or staff member and respond with solutions that raise our standards and improve the quality of the care patients receive in the Emergency Department,” noted Jay Itzkowitz, Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

“Dr. DiBella is defined by her professionalism, compassion, and humility,” commented Adhi Sharma, President of Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital. “She is highly respected by all staff in the Emergency Department,” he concluded.

Dr. DiBella calls West Islip, New York her home; and she has played a key role in the Mount Sinai South Nassau Emergency Department since 2016.

After receiving her medical degree from LECOM, the accomplished graduate undertook a rigorous Emergency Medicine Residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, where she served as Chief Resident.

Whether addressing the immediate needs of patients during the COVID-19 Pandemic or attending to patient needs on any given day in a hectic emergency room, Dr. DiBella’s dedication to her patients is the personification of an Unsung Hero.

As a mother of three boys, Dr. DiBella adeptly balances work and home life with poise and grace. Her time in the Emergency Room finds her working during the wee hours of the night to make a difference to those in dire need of care. Indeed, her work is testament to the dedication of emergency medicine professionals who deliver critical care to their communities.

If the past is prologue, there is little doubt that Dr. Brittney DiBella will balance life and life-saving with the same evident aplomb that she has demonstrated thus far.

The awe and majesty of understanding the human body, the privilege of being trusted to provide advice and care, the grateful eyes of a patient whom one has helped through a difficult illness or injury – these things never grow old; and they are part and parcel of Dr. Brittney DiBella’s mission on each day as an Unsung Hero.
