Biography
Dr. Smith is board certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine with LECOM. He has over ten years of clinical experience serving as a previous Chief of Emergency Medicine and the Medical Director at St. Vincent’s Southside. He also has served as the Associate Dean of Clinical Assessment and Integration with LECOM. He has many years of experience working with third and fourth year medical students in Northeast Florida and serves as a Regional Dean for students at UF Flagler St. Johns Hospital, Advent and Ascension St. Vincent’s Hospitals.
His passion for teaching clinical reasoning led him to work and help develop the first online Clinical Reasoning Platform with the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Healer. His passion in teaching clinical reasoning extends to his heavy participation with the Clinical Problem Solvers where he has served as a team member helping produce the “Clinical Unknown” podcast series and Virtual Morning Reports. He also is a frequent guest and editor on the podcast EMBoardBombs. His passion for helping students create case reports led him to work closely with The Human Dx Project where he serves as a lead editor for the platform that incorporates case reports and clinical reasoning. His vision for free online access to medical education FOAMed led to a partnership with the only PubMed indexed updatable online platform, Stat Pearls where he has served as a Chief Editor. Dr. Smith has been named the founding Dean of LECOM’s fifth campus, LECOM at Jacksonville University, which is projected to accept its first class in 2026.
