LECOM Researchers Published on Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in Cancer Supportive Care

A team of researchers, including four student co-authors from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), recently released an open access systematic review entitled, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Complementary and Integrative Approach for Cancer Supportive Care:  A Systematic Review, published in the peer-reviewed journal, Cancers.

The LECOM team includes Stuti Patel, Christopher J. Thimons, and Hannah Steele, who are second-year osteopathic medical students, and Misha Mathur, who is a third-year osteopathic medical student.  They are mentored by David Boesler, D.O., Associate Professor of Osteopathic Principles and Practice at LECOM–Bradenton, whose guidance and expertise support the scholars’ academic and professional development; and further guided by Anupam Bishayee, M.Pharm., Ph.D., FNAOME

Director of Research and Professor of Pharmacology at LECOM Bradenton.

The review evaluated the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as a complementary approach to supportive cancer care.  Findings suggest that a variety of osteopathic techniques – including myofascial release, muscle energy, lymphatic drainage, and cranial approaches – may help alleviate symptoms, improve functional capabilities, and enhance quality of life for patients with a wide range of cancers when used alongside conventional treatment.

Congratulations to the faculty researchers and the LECOM student

co-authors on this important scholarly achievement and their contribution to advancing evidence-based osteopathic medicine.
