Biography
Elisabeth F. M. Schlegel, PhD, MSc, MBA, MS(HPPL), is Professor of Genetics and Microbiology at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Bradenton campus. She teaches genetics, microbiology, and problem-based learning across the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Medical Science programs while contributing to curriculum development, academic advising, and student success.
A scientist-educator with an international career, Dr. Schlegel combines expertise in microbiology and virology with a passion for innovative, learner-centered medical education. Her experience spans integrated curriculum design, assessment, faculty development, continuous quality improvement, and student scholarship.
Dr. Schlegel completed postdoctoral training in herpesvirology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She has published and presented internationally on microbiology, curriculum design, faculty development, teaching and learning, digital education, and basic–clinical science integration. Her scholarship appears in journals including Journal of Virology, Medical Teacher, Academic Medicine, Medical Science Educator, and MedEdPORTAL. She is the founder and publisher of eLearning Bites, a medical education platform reaching approximately 16,000 users across 95 countries. Her current interests center on artificial intelligence, digital and microscholarship, and innovative teaching.
