Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Scholars Pioneering New Frontiers in Osteosarcoma Treatment

A groundbreaking new publication entitled, Targeting Signaling Cascades by Bioactive Phytocompounds in Osteosarcoma:  A Novel Therapeutic Approach, has been published in the esteemed journal Pharmacology and Therapeutics (Impact Factor: 12.5) by Elsevier.

This article represents an impressive achievement, not only for cancer research, but also for the College of Osteopathic Medicine at LECOM.  The first seven coauthors of this publication are current LECOM students or recent graduates, showcasing the dedication and cutting-edge contributions of LECOM scholars to the medical community.

Osteosarcoma, an aggressive and often devastating primary malignant bone tumor, presents a significant challenge for clinicians and researchers.  While traditional treatments like chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation remain the standard, these therapies can be associated with harsh side effects and limited effectiveness.  To address this problem, innovative research into alternative therapeutic strategies, including the use of bioactive phytochemicals, has gained increasing attention.

In this publication, LECOM scholars have taken a major step forward by conducting a thorough, systematic review of the current evidence on the potential of bioactive phytochemicals in preventing and treating osteosarcoma. These natural compounds, derived from plants, have shown great promise in influencing key molecular and cellular processes that drive the growth and spread of cancer cells.

What makes this review exceptional is its depth and breadth.  The LECOM team conducted a comprehensive examination of various classes of phytochemicals, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and polyphenols, and studied their effects upon osteosarcoma in preclinical models.  Beyond simply reviewing existing data, the authors carefully explored the molecular and cellular targets of these bioactive compounds, including their role in critical pathways like apoptosis, cell cycle regulation, and angiogenesis. These insights could provide the key to overcoming the challenges associated with traditional therapies, offering new avenues for more effective and less toxic treatment options for osteosarcoma patients.
