LECOM Student Scholarship Spotlight

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) congratulates second-year medical student, Gideon Schamberger, on his recent scholarly achievement.

Schamberger presented a research poster entitled, Using a Molecular Testing Algorithm for Surveillance of Vector-Borne Pathogens in Ticks from Monroe County, New York, at the 89th Annual Florida Academy of Sciences Meeting on March 20, 2026.

His work highlights the growing importance of molecular diagnostics in identifying and monitoring vector-borne diseases, contributing to improved public health surveillance and response strategies. This research represents an important step toward enhancing early detection of pathogens carried by ticks, a significant concern in many regions of the United States.

Schamberger conducted this research under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Tucker, LECOM Assistant Professor of Microbiology, whose guidance supported the development and execution of this project.

LECOM commends Gideon Schamberger for his dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and for expertly representing his Alma Mater through scholarly excellence.
