Biography
Dr. Bhumika Sharma is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she facilitates foundational basic science education for first‑year medical students through the Problem‑Based Learning Pathway and contributes to institutional admissions through her service on the LECOM Admissions Committee. Her current work emphasizes medical education, student mentoring, and the integration of microbiological principles into clinical reasoning. Prior to joining LECOM, Dr. Sharma built extensive expertise in bacteriology, molecular diagnostics, and vector‑borne pathogen surveillance through her research and teaching at St. George’s University, where she developed PCR‑based assays for Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species and mentored veterinary and graduate researchers. She has authored multiple peer‑reviewed publications, secured competitive research funding as PI and Co‑PI, and has been recognized with awards including the Zoetis Faculty Research Award and a top‑ranked performance in the 2024 UNSGM bioinformatics external quality assurance exercise.
