Biography
Todd A. Nolan, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Physiology and has served as the Director of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) at the LECOM School of Dental Medicine since 2016. He developed and implemented a new PBL curriculum for the School of Dental Medicine. He is the co-course director of Orthodontics, where he lectures on craniofacial development. Additionally, Dr. Nolan lectures in neuromuscular physiology in the Pharmacy and Masters of Medical Science programs and provides lectures in pain physiology in the Oral Surgery course. Dr. Nolan completed his undergraduate work at the Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. He attended East Carolina University, where he earned his doctorate in physiology in the laboratory of Kori Brewer, Ph.D.  Following the completion of his doctoral degree, he completed a four-year fellowship at the University of Florida School Of Dental Medicine under the mentorship of John Neubert, D.D.S.,  where he developed a new model of placebo analgesia. Dr. Nolan has published original science articles in peer-reviewed journals and has made numerous oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences. He guided the development of the first operant pain-testing system (OPAD), the technology for which was licensed by Stoelting.  He provided counsel to a new medical school on the development of cases for their curriculum and has produced a faculty development series fostering PBL group-facilitator skills and efficacy. He has taught case development strategies for Case-Based Learning (CBL), Team-Based Learning (TBL), and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curricula to hundreds, most recently presenting a case development course to 50 attendees at an international conference with effective outcomes. He is recognized as an expert in active learning pedagogies. Dr. Nolan’s vision includes opening a new world of opportunities to impact student growth and expand opportunities in the healthcare industry. Areas of Research Interest: Active learning, Group dynamics, Placebo analgesia, Neurodegeneration, Opioid abuse
