Dr. Jonathan Coffman is Associate Professor and Director of Experiential Learning for the Masters in Health Services Administration at LECOM Bradenton. He has spent most of his career in academic medicine in addition to his work as a business consultant, accreditation consultant and owner of a medical practice. Dr. Coffman served as an Associate Professor at Nova South Eastern University’s Health Professions Division (HPD) for 8 years in the Department of Microbiology where he taught Medical Virology to medical, dental and pharmacy students. He also worked with the undergraduate programs at Florida Atlantic University and developed Microbiology and Biotechnology laboratory courses. At Barry University, Dr. Coffman directed the College of Biomedical Sciences and initiated progressive business and marketing plans that resulted in significant revenue improvements and educational outcomes. Larkin Community Hospital later hired Dr. Coffman as the founding Dean of the College of Biomedical Sciences, and Dr. Coffman secured a State of Florida license and non-profit status for the new school, Larkin Health Sciences Institute. Dr. Coffman developed four graduate programs for the institution, implemented active-learning experiences for the students and operated a program that was profitable in its first year of operation. Dr. Coffman has extensive experience in programmatic and institutional accreditation. He successfully obtained accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) for a College of Pharmacy to offer continuing education (CE) and was trained as and served as an ACPE field reviewer. At Barry University, he assessed and evaluated the goals and objectives for the College of Biomedical Sciences and successfully developed a multi-year plan congruent with the accreditation standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC). As a consultant, Dr. Coffman was a member of a team that developed a medical school according to the standards of accreditation established by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), and he also consulted for institutes seeking accreditation through the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). At LECOM, Dr. Coffman has assisted in the development and assessment of the MHSA program’s accreditation candidacy through the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) and will continue to support the development and continual improvement of the program. Dr. Coffman’s research has included the DNA sequencing of biofilms to detect the presence of nonculturable bacteria and fungi.
