Financial Aid – LECOM Scholarship Program
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine has been building its scholarship program since its inception in 1992. The Scholarship Program was established from private donations and fundraising efforts of the college. The annual LECOM Auction is a major source of funding for the LECOM Scholarship Program. Individual donors, as well as local businesses and organizations have also established special awards and scholarships to be presented annually to matriculating and/or graduating students.
There are two types of scholarships currently available: the LECOM Academic Scholarship and Exceptional Financial Need Scholarship. The scholarships are available for students in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Dental Medicine programs. Scholarships are awarded each academic year and are applied to tuition and fee charges. Recipients are selected from applicants who complete and submit an official scholarship application (unless otherwise noted), meet the scholarship criteria, are making satisfactory academic progress, and are recommended by the Scholarship Committee. Students on conduct probation are not eligible for LECOM Scholarships.
Currently enrolled students only need to complete one application for the LECOM Academic Scholarship and/or Exceptional Financial Need scholarships. Complete an application even if you received a renewable LECOM Scholarship in the past. Scholarship applications must include any supporting documentation required by the scholarship program. In addition, it is requested that scholarship recipients volunteer at the LECOM Scholarship Auction or a Scholarship fund raising/Auction related activity. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid with any questions you may have regarding the scholarship application process. Students will be notified via email when applications will be accepted. Applications will be accepted until October 1, 2018. Scholarships will be awarded in late fall and credited to your second-semester (Spring 2019) tuition.
Please note: Students may receive only one LECOM Scholarship or discount per academic year. If a student receives a LECOM Scholarship earlier in the academic year, then the student would not be eligible to receive another LECOM Scholarship. If a student subsequently enrolls concurrently in another program in which a discount may be offered, then the discount will be reduced by the amount of the earlier LECOM Scholarship.
LECOM Academic Scholarship: Scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and/or teamwork abilities and/or provide service to a student club or organization. Recipients must demonstrate a commitment to LECOM, the osteopathic profession, the pharmacy profession or the dental profession and service to the community. Recipients are requested to volunteer at the LECOM Scholarship Auction or a Scholarship fund raising/Auction related activity. Scholarship funds may only be applied to tuition and fees. Recipients must have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Dental students’ applications will be ranked by the School of Dental Medicine.
Exceptional Financial Need Scholarship: Scholarships are awarded to medical, pharmacy and dental students who have exceptional financial need, which is based on the federal needs analysis performed on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and completion of the LECOM Exceptional Financial Need Application. Recipients are requested to volunteer at the LECOM Scholarship Auction or Scholarship fund raising/Auction related activity. Scholarship funds may only be applied to tuition and fees. Recipients must be making satisfactory academic progress.

A reminder regarding financial aid overawards: According to Federal regulations, total loan amounts borrowed and scholarships received from all sources cannot exceed the cost of education at LECOM. If you receive a LECOM Scholarship, your loan eligibility will be reduced by the amount of the scholarship. In addition, if you receive any additional awards (scholarships, grants, loans, etc.) after your financial aid has been processed; the second disbursement of your loan(s) may need to be reduced to prevent a financial aid overaward. However, you are not receiving less financial aid, you are borrowing less money.
