The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is the core part of LECOM Health, which is a comprehensive, integrated academic health center dedicated to training the next generation of whole-person healthcare providers. LECOM Health positions itself as the premier provider of lifelong, whole-person health care that attends to mind, body, and spirit.

The College mission and values lend themselves to establishing a graduate program that guides today’s healthcare practitioners to apply the necessary, well-informed ethical knowledge and skills which provide patients a meaningful opportunity to be heard and acknowledged by a practitioner acting as their partner and advocate in wellness, and who genuinely regards their mental and spiritual well-being as important pieces of total patient care. When ethical issues and conflicts arise within clinical settings among patients and their health professionals, patients and their families, co-workers, or administrators and their staff, those well trained in healthcare ethics will be more knowledgeable, better equipped, and more effective at facilitating acceptable resolutions.

LECOM recognizes that leaders and professionals in health care carry exceptional responsibility for improving patient-centered care. The MSBE program will help assure that care provided is ethics-based, respectful of, and responsive to individual¬†patient¬†preferences, needs and values, and that clinical decisions are guided by patients’¬†values.

This program will employ practical, recognized pedagogical strategies, and plumb relevant issues best suited to teach ethics concepts and applications that students can relate to, internalize, and incorporate into their practices.

Understanding and supporting patient-centered care is a fundamental value of LECOM Health. The process of change from a traditional, provider decision-making process to a patient engagement approach that fosters reciprocal sharing of information, preference solicitation, and timely integration into care requires better modeling and more thorough, practical training and assessment in empathy and sensitivity, ethics and compliance issues, and cultural competence.

Aligning the care patients receive with their informed preferences is the essence of patient-centered care. Training is needed for providers to learn skills and quality measurements needed to monitor the implementation of true patient-centered care that leads to positive outcomes.
