MS in Medical Education Curriculum
The Masters in Med Ed program spans four semesters in two years. Coursework
consists of 32 credit hours delivered in 12 courses. Students complete three courses each semester,
one from each of the Program’s three curriculum components: A. Core
Foundations in Medical Education I-IV (14 Credit Hours) Provides pragmatic knowledge and
learning in the principles of medical education, educational psychology, teaching in the clinical
environment, administrative skills, educational leadership, and educational scholarship/research.
Instructional design includes completing assigned journal article / book readings, analyzing case
studies, writing short papers, integrative learning, and participation in discussion forums.
B. Educational Practicum I-IV (9 Credit Hours) Focuses an in-depth study on the
advancement of the practice of teaching. Topics include basic clinical teaching skills, effective
lecturing and small group teaching, educational assessment and evaluation, and mentored teaching
activities. Instructional design includes completing assigned journal article / book readings,
analyzing case studies, writing short papers, and integrative learning. Students will also discuss
their experiences as teachers within discussion forums and in one-on-one meetings with their
advisers. C. Master's Curriculum / Thesis Project I-IV (9 Credit
Hours) Guides students through the developmental process of curriculum design. Students select
a topic of relevance, define the need and rationale for the topic through a literature review and a
needs assessment, create curricular goals and objectives, design curricular teaching strategies,
describe and circumvent implementation issues, implement a curricular program evaluation, and
propose and justify a budget. Instructional design includes completing assigned journal article /
book readings, analyzing case studies, integrative learning, participation in discussion forums,
and continual mentoring/feedback of the project from designated advisers. The end product is a
complete, ready-to-implement curriculum that is written scholarly in the format of a high-level
grant proposal. Students are encouraged to present their projects at major academic meetings,
publish their work in educational journals, and submit their projects for funding.
