A Guide to LECOM School of Pharmacy Clubs and Organizations
American Pharmacists
Association-Academy of Students of Pharmacy (APhA-ASP) The mission of the American
Pharmacists Association is to provide information, education, and advocacy to help all pharmacists
improve medication use and advance patient care. The APhA represents the third largest health
profession and is composed of more than 50,000 members including practicing pharmacists,
pharmaceutical scientists, student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in
advancing the profession. The APhA-ASP also represents student pharmacists as their primary voice
in their chosen profession. Each school or college of pharmacy in the United States and Puerto Rico
has an APhA-ASP chapter. The Association is responsible for providing timely information on
pharmacy practice issues, association programs, services and benefits to chapters for use in their
operations. Chapters and their members are eligible for numerous awards, grants and scholarships
available through the Academy, the Association and the APhA Foundation. Kappa Psi
Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. Kappa Psi, founded in 1879, is the oldest and largest
professional pharmaceutical fraternity in the world. The purpose of Kappa Psi is to bring together
pharmacy students for the mutual benefit of all its members in a professionally oriented manner.
Kappa Psi promotes high ideals, scholarship and provides bonds of lasting interest, loyalty and
friendship. The fraternity supports community projects that will advance and create active
involvement in the profession of pharmacy. Kappa Psi inspires in its members a deep and lasting
pride in their Fraternity and in the profession of pharmacy. LECOM School of
Pharmacy Mentoring Club The LECOM School of Pharmacy Mentoring Club works in
conjunction with the YMCA of Erie in order to provide children that reside in the John E. Horan
Garden Apartments with after school programs, which are aimed to: • Provide an outlet
for valued life experience, feedback, assurance and reassurance of self worth through valued
contributions of time, insight and experience as well as a connection between the generations. • Provide a positive subjective psychological mirror through which the children's identity
can be reinforced. • Provide various motivating projects to promote both educational
and self growth. LECOM School of Pharmacy Student Government
Association This organization is open to all LECOM pharmacy students and welcomes
proposals and participation from the entire student body. The responsibilities of Student
Government include: collecting and expressing student opinion; dispensing funds for student
activities, acting as a liaison for the student body; supporting organizations, clubs, and class
activities; and working to improve the quality of life for all students at LECOM. Student
Government also oversees all of the School of Pharmacy’s athletic programs and encourages the
formation of athletic activities in which students have an interest in. This has included, but is
not limited to, intramural programs in softball and indoor soccer.
National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) The National Community
Pharmacists Association (NCPA), founded in 1898 as the National Association of Retail Druggists
(NARD), represents the pharmacist owners, managers, and employees of nearly 25,000 independent
community pharmacies across the United States. Independent pharmacists - more than 60,000
nationwide - dispense the majority of the nation's retail prescription drugs. The nation's
independent pharmacists are small business entrepreneurs and multifaceted health care providers who
represent a vital part of the United States' health care delivery system. They have roots in
America's communities. They are community leaders actively involved in community-oriented public
health, civic, and volunteer projects. Many hold local elected offices; others serve as state
legislators. The LECOM School of Pharmacy started a student chapter of NCPA in 2004. National Pharmaceutical Association - Student National Pharmaceutical Association
(SNPhA) The mission of NPhA states it is “dedicated to representing the views
and ideas of minority pharmacists on critical issues affecting health care and pharmacy, as well as
advancing the standards of pharmaceutical care among all practitioners.” The Student National
Pharmaceutical Association is an education and public service association of pharmacy students and
high school affiliate members, concerned about pharmacy, health care issues, and the need for
greater minority representation in pharmacy and other health professions. The purpose of SNPhA is
to plan, organize, coordinate, and execute programs geared toward improvement of health, social,
and educational environment of the community while providing opportunities for professional
development. The LECOM School of Pharmacy Chapter is dedicated to extending the realm of pharmacy
practice into the community of Erie. The LECOM School of Pharmacy SNPhA Chapter has and will
continue to educate and furnish the community of Erie with the wealth of medical and health
information fundamental to the concept of pharmaceutical care. Phi Lambda
Sigma National Pharmacy Leadership Society (Gamma Iota Chapter) The purpose of Phi
Lambda Sigma is to promote the development of leadership qualities, especially among pharmacy
students. By peer recognition, the Society encourages participation in all pharmacy activities.
Since leadership crosses fraternal and organizational lines, the Society does not compete with
other pharmacy organizations. Phi Lambda Sigma is complementary to Rho Chi in that it honors
leadership, while Rho Chi honors scholastic achievement. Members are selected by peer recognition.
No greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than to be recognized as a leader by
one’s peers. The goals of Phi Lambda Sigma are to: • motivate and
facilitate the acceptance of opportunities [by members] to serve in a leadership role •
acknowledge leadership achievement and award membership to leaders recommended by the Society
• develop and deliver programs and services to assist those who desire to serve in a leadership
role and to sustain leadership commitment. The LECOM chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma received its
charter and initiated the founding members in the Spring of 2006. Rho
Chi The Rho Chi Society, Pharmacy's academic honor society, encourages and
recognizes excellence in intellectual achievement and fosters fellowship among its members.
Further, the Society encourages high standards of conduct and character, and advocates critical
inquiry in all aspects of pharmacy. Membership in the Rho Chi Society is a privilege accorded to
the very few who distinguish themselves by their academic and professional achievements and who
aspire to the mission and vision of the Society. The honor society thus has two aims: (1) it
recognizes and rewards outstanding scholarly attainment, and (2) it thereby encourages and
stimulates outstanding scholarship and service. Candidates are eligible for membership if they are
in the top 20% of their class AND have attained a GPA of 3.0 or higher after completion of either
the first or second year of didactic coursework. RX Runners Club The RX Runners Club is a club designed to bring pharmacy students together in exercise and
community projects. The club provides a break from the routine of school work while making
contributions to our community through various service projects. This club is open to runners and
walkers. Student Ambassador Program The LECOM School of
Pharmacy Student Ambassador Program has been developed to address the need for well-informed,
positive and professional students to represent the School for recruitment, public relations and
development activities. Selected students participate in a variety of activities arranged by the
Director of Admissions and Student Services and Office of Communications and Marketing. The
Student Ambassador Program serves the School by participating in a variety of activities which
include: hosting prospective students who attend On-Campus Day, serving as a “contact
person” for accepted students, serving as a “resource person” for currently
enrolled students, and visiting local colleges and universities with admission recruiters to meet
with prospective students and pre-health professions advisors. Students may apply during the
last term of their first or second academic year. Competition is high for this prestigious
position. Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP)
The Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists is a professional association that represents
student pharmacists who intend to practice in hospitals, health maintenance organizations,
long-term care facilities, home infusion, and in various other clinical roles of the health care
system. The organization includes students at the local, state (Pennsylvania SHP, Florida SHP), and
national (ASHP) levels by providing programs and resources concerned with career opportunities,
residencies, and the ever expanding role of clinical pharmacists as part of the health care team.
The LECOM Erie organization has developed close ties with the Northwestern Chapter of PSHP
(NWPSHP), allowing students to network and receive mentoring from area pharmacists. Monthly
meetings are held at LECOM and Student Chapter members are also invited to attend the monthly
NWPSHP meetings. Student Chapter members are strongly encouraged to join either one of the parent
organizations, PSHP, FSHP or ASHP. This affords the opportunity to participate in events at the
state or national level. The organization is involved in many community service projects including
a medication awareness program at local senior centers during Pharmacy Week and assisting in
pharmacy brownbag events. The LECOM Erie club participates in Pharmacy Day at the Capitol in
Harrisburg, PA to meet with current legislators and in the annual NWPSHP summer picnic, providing
an opportunity to socialize with area pharmacists. Habitat for Humanity
The LECOM Bradenton chapter of Habitat for Humanity provides the opportunity for LECOM students,
both medical and pharmacy, to have hands on experience, work together, and provide a positive impact
on our community. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry.
Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make
decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
