A Guide to LECOM Medical College Clubs and Organizations

LECOM encourages students to become active community leaders while stressing academic success. The goals of LECOM clubs and organizations are briefly defined below along with a description of their community service, educational and social activities. Some of the activities listed are ongoing each year; others are examples of activities that have been offered in the past. The College requires all club officers to maintain a 3.0 grade point average while serving their organizations.

LECOM Student Government Association
Student Government is open to all LECOM medical students and welcomes participation from the entire student body. The responsibilities of Student Government include collecting and expressing student opinion, dispensing of funds for student activities, acting as a liaison for the student body, promoting osteopathic medicine, supporting club and class activities, and working to improve the quality of life for all students at LECOM. Alternative/Integrative Medicine Club
The Alternative Medicine Club offers a different approach to standard modern medicine. This club spends time educating students on the many different forms of medicine that patients might receive. The club also offers yoga on a weekly basis to help relieve the stresses of medical school life.

American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP)
ACOFP is the national professional organization for osteopathic family physicians. The goal of ACOFP is to promote understanding of family medicine and the great responsibility that family physicians will play in the future of medicine and managed care. The LECOM chapter of ACOFP is the largest student group on campus. ACOFP is primarily responsible for National Primary Care Day, a day of learning for students with emphasis on procedural workshops and interaction with professionals. Since one of the main precepts of osteopathy is preventive care, LECOM’s ACOFP is active with projects such as “Caring for Kids” and high school education programs. Many exciting activities are planned to provide students with recreational opportunities as well as a chance to enhance their growth as future osteopathic family physicians.

Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA)
The Christian Medical and Dental Society (CMDA) is a national organization of physicians, dentists, and medical and dental students who strive to integrate their Christian beliefs within the health care that they provide. As a student chapter, CMDA attempts to achieve this through fellowship, prayer, Bible study, and communication with the local graduate chapter and the national office. CMDA encompasses five core themes to its mission, which are: (1) whole person medicine, (2) medical and dental ethics, (3) medical and dental missions, (4) medical and dental marriages, and (5) sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. With chapters in nearly every U.S. medical and dental school, CMDA provides opportunities for fellowship with other Christian health profession students at other schools.

Emergency Medicine Club
The LECOM Emergency Medical Club is a student chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP). EMC is an organization for all medical students, not just those interested in the Emergency Medical Care. The club offers many opportunities to LECOM students via guest lectures, hands-on skill opportunities, ride-along programs with EmergyCare and Life Flight, and national conventions.

Internal Medicine Club
This organization is devoted to educating medical students on the various aspects of being an internist. Club members participate with Internal Medicine Journal Club at Millcreek Community Hospital for discussion with hospital physicians on current medical topics. Other goals of the club include educating students on the specialties available to internists, what to expect on an Internal Medicine clerkship, and other current issues that may arise in the field of Internal Medicine. The club offers a shadowing program for various fields including: cardiology, radiology, and gastroenterology.

International Medical Society (IMS)
The International Medical Society is active in promoting the mutual understanding the role of osteopathic medicine in health care throughout the world. To this end, IMS works with the LECOM Office of International Affairs to place members in elective rotations in approved foreign facilities. Club activities include international dinners and medical mission trips. The International Medical Society established LECOM Cares as a way to raise funds for various world health causes.

Martial Arts Club
This club is made up of students and faculty working together with the YMCA of Erie to promote fitness and discipline in area youth. Club members have weekly meetings during which kids from the Erie Heights community are brought in to learn and train in Tae Kwon Do.

Mentoring Club
The Mentoring Club is an affiliation between LECOM and the YMCA of Erie, with the purpose of providing educational programming and mentors for the children that live in Erie Heights. The medical students serve as mentors and act as positive role models for the children with the goal of making a difference in the life of a child. Additionally, the mentors strive to instill a love for education and learning in the children. The LECOM mentors interact with the children in many different aspects, some educational, some recreational. Educational programs include Boy Scouts and participation in activities at the Reading and Learning Center located in Erie Heights. The Center consists of a library, computer room, and reading and homework room. The goal of the mentoring club is to provide mentors to the reading center on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Members are asked to sign up for one-hour time slots a couple of times a month. Additionally, one or two special activities are done each month with the kids.

Military Medicine Club (MMC)
The Military Medicine Club helps medical students prepare for their yearly military assignment, assists in completing paperwork for military rotations, and provides a forum for feedback on rotations from current 3rd and 4th year students. MMC helps with information and contacts for individuals who are interested in joining the Health Professions Scholarship Program. The Military Club is involved in community service activities that benefit both the military and civilian communities in Erie and throughout the world.

Muslim Medical Students Association (MMSA)
The MMSA is an organization that works for the betterment of the Muslim and Non-Muslim community on campus through community service, education, and social activities. The purpose of the Muslim Medical Students Association is to facilitate a forum for Muslims and non-Muslims for education on Islam, the world's second largest and fastest growing religion. Major events such as Eid Dinners, Fast-a-thon, educational panels, and more provide students with both exciting and illuminating experiences to broaden people's perspectives on Islam and promote the cultural, ethnic and ideological diversity that characterizes the religion.

Neurology/Psychiatry Club

The Neurology/Psychiatry Club is an organization that provides osteopathic medical students with an understanding of the professional and personal integration of psychological and sociological underpinnings that typically co-occur with medical disorders. This is done by student participation in various in-school activities and presentations, as well as providing community activities related to some facet of psychosocial concerns. The club’s purpose is to foster medical student interest in both Neurology and Psychiatry by providing opportunities to participate in clinical, research, and service activities pertaining to these fields.

Ob/Gyn Club
The OB/Gyn Club was organized to provide experience and education in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. This club is not only for those interested in OB/Gyn, but for anyone will care for female patients including family physicians who see OB/Gyn patients. Because OB/Gyn is a core clinical rotation for 3rd and 4th year medical students, the club is a great opportunity for students to learn more about this medical specialty.

Orthopedics Club
The LECOM orthopedics club focuses on clinically based educational presentations and workshops by local orthopedic residents. Club activities include X-ray interpretation seminars, casting techniques, and shadowing opportunities.

Pediatrics Club
The purpose of this club is to help medical students who are interested in a future as a pediatrician to see their true potential. This club provides information and skill training needed to become a successful osteopathic pediatrician and understand how the pediatrician focuses on the improvement of a child’s physical and mental health. With its many activities, the Pediatrics Club at LECOM allows its members to begin to touch the lives of many children in the Erie area. This club hopes to keep its members excited about their future careers as pediatricians.

Sigma Sigma Phi (SSP)
Sigma Sigma Phi is a service society to recognize medical students who show a commitment to community service. Membership selection and participation require students to have and maintain a 3.0 grade point average to become a member. The student must remain in good academic standing. Membership is restricted to no greater than 25% of the class and will be determined during the second semester of the first year. Club activities include a Blood Drive, Toys for Tots, and LECOM Live, a venue for LECOM musicians to perform.

Sports Medicine Club (SMC)
The SMC's goal is to introduce students to osteopathic philosophies in the setting of sports medicine. Osteopathic medicine and sports medicine are deeply intertwined, and the SMC endeavors to help LECOM students broaden their knowledge of OMM and how it is used to treat and prevent dysfunctions in the field of sports medicine. The club conducts some activities with the Orthopedics club.

Student Ambassador Program
The LECOM Student Ambassador Program has been developed to address the need for well-informed, positive and professional students to represent the School for recruitment, public relations and development activities. Selected students participate in a variety of activities arranged by the Director of Admissions and Student Services and Office of Communications and Marketing. The Student Ambassador Program serves the School by participating in a variety of activities which include: hosting prospective students who attend On-Campus Day, serving as a “contact person” for accepted students, serving as a “resource person” for currently enrolled students, and visiting local colleges and universities with admission recruiters to meet with prospective students and pre-health professions advisors. Students may apply during the second semester of their first or second academic year. Competition is high for this prestigious position.

Student Auxillary Support Network (SASN)
This organization provides opportunities for spouses, family members, and significant others of LECOM students to socialize with and support one another throughout the medical school years. The group offers social activities for the spouses and significant others and events for couples and their children.

Student National Medical Association (SNMA)
SNMA is the student accompaniment to the National Medical Association (NMA). The function of both organizations is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the health professions. These organizations also function to make sure that underrepresented minorities have adequate access to healthcare. There is also an associated chapter, Minority Association of Pre-medical Students, or MAPS, for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students. This group provides awareness of the health professions and helps high school and undergraduate students with the decision to enter those professions.

Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA)

The Student Osteopathic Medical Association is recognized by the American Osteopathic Association and the American Medical Association as the National Professional Society of Osteopathic Medical Students. SOMA is the largest osteopathic medical student organization in the world with over 6000 members, and serves as the student branch of the AOA. SOMA membership offers many benefits including loans and scholarships, stipends for conventions, and as a special gift, a free Netter Anatomy Atlas with each new membership. At LECOM, members can benefit from education/lecture series presentations, social opportunities, and national representation.

Student Osteopathic Research Association (SORA)
Student Osteopathic Research Association has been established for students who have an interest in medical research, and in particular, advancing the philosophies of osteopathic medicine through research. Guest lectures and poster presentations are common activities for SORA members, and are open to all LECOM students.

Student Osteopathic Surgery Association (SOSA)
The Student Osteopathic Surgery Association (SOSA) is a national organization associated with the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. This affiliation provides the student chapter with opportunities to meet surgeons throughout the nation via lectures and national conventions. LECOM’s SOSA chapter is dedicated to helping interested students learn more about surgery as a medical specialty via lectures from local surgeons. Furthermore, valuable information about rotations, internships, and residencies is covered throughout the year. SOSA is not limited to students who plan to pursue careers in surgery. Students with any level of interest are encouraged to join.

Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy (UAAO)
The Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy (UAAO) is an organization designed to help students realize their full potential as osteopathic physicians. The focus of UAAO is the promotion and perpetuation of osteopathic philosophy, principles, and manipulation. The program serves to broaden and expand students’ understanding of osteopathic concepts in practice. As members of UAAO, students will receive many benefits, including a better understanding of osteopathic practice, newsletters, discounts, and attendance at the annual convention. At LECOM, UAAO organizes weekly OMT reviews and holds an OMT table sale throughout the year.

Women’s Health and Medical Society
The purpose of the Women’s Health and Medical Society is to address the issues pertinent to women in medicine in two ways: (1) Women as medicals students and practitioners; specifically, concerns related to family and career, and (2) Women as patients and their concerns for women’s health. Women’s Health and Medical Society also provides a local link to the national women’s medical societies: The National Osteopathic Women Physician’s Association (NOWPA) and the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA).

Wilderness Medicine Club (WMC)
The Wilderness Medicine Club was established for students who are interested in participating in activities of the great outdoors such as hiking, biking, and skiing. This club organizes outdoor activities for the enjoyment of members and to to increase awareness of environmental issues, and topics related to environmental health and exercise.
