LECOM Poison Prevention Program

LECOM students have teamed with the Erie County Safe Kids Network to promote poison prevention awareness. Students conduct dozens of presentations each semester at local schools, community agencies and health fairs.

In October, LECOM students give the presentation during the Erie Achievement Center Trail of Treats – about 8,000 children participate in this annual Halloween activity in a local shopping mall. In place of candy, LECOM gives each child Mr. Yuk stickers as the students compare candy, beverages and other foods with medicines and poisonous household products that look very similar to the treats the children would find at home.

In March, LECOM again conducts the poison prevention program at a local mall as part of Poison Prevention Month. LECOM also produces radio and TV spots that run on the local stations during March. LECOM students provide poison prevention tips in these public service announcements. Throughout the year, LECOM students take the poison prevention demonstration to schools and local community events.
