LECOM Mentors Provide Role Models For Erie Children
The LECOM Mentoring Club provides role models, academic help and health/safety education
to underprivileged children ages 4 to 18 who reside at the Erie Heights Apartments near the campus
and other Erie Housing Authority complexes.
The Mentoring Club works in conjunction with the
YMCA of Erie, which manages a reading center and recreational facilities at Erie Heights, from 1 to
9 p.m. daily. The Mentoring Club staffs the reading center five days a week, three hours a day
throughout the school year to provide teacher-directed assistance to students, to read stories to
children from the 1,000-volume library (supplied and updated by the Erie County Library) and to
attend YMCA-sponsored movies with the children.
Educational activities have included
fire safety, bicycle safety, Dr. Bag’s (what doctors use to do check ups), and "Healthy
Hearts". Special activities provided for the children have included baseball outings,
barbecues, visits to the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home, Halloween crafts,
ZooBoo, an annual Halloween party, Thanksgiving shopping and dinner, Christmas crafts, a Christmas
party, breakfast with Santa, attendance at hockey games, snow tubing, bowling, Easter breakfast, an
ice cream social and a "Reality Store" activity that teaches children about earning a
living and paying their bills. Each year, the students hold Recognition Night, which honors the
mentors and their students' accomplishments.
The Erie Housing Authority received a
National Housing Association award reflecting the accomplishments of the LECOM mentoring programs
and the Erie YMCA. At the award presentation ceremony, John Horan, executive director of the Erie
Housing Authority, praised and commended the LECOM mentors who volunteer their time. "The
recognition at the national level is a testimony to the overall success of LECOM’s community
commitment," Horan said.
