Second-year pharmacy student Elizabeth Reist honored for public health projects

As part of the effort of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) to encourage pharmacy students to become active in public health, the agency has established the Excellence in Public Health Pharmacy Practice Award. This year, the agency recognized the work of Elizabeth Reist, a second-year pharmacy student at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy. Student Pharmacist Reist, from Amherst, NY, is very active in research and community service

Reist has been involved with the Diabetes Solution Day, Adolescent Anti-Smoking Education for local schools, and her work with LECOM professional pharmacy organizations that support the philosophy of the USPHS by holding events such as immunization education and hunger awareness campaigns.   She also traveled to Kenya, Africa where she worked with disadvantaged patients.

 In presenting the award for the USPHS, Commander William H. Bender, RPh, MS HCA recognized Reist as a student who has demonstrated a commitment to public health and public health practice. He added that she has displayed excellent leadership attributes with her work in the Student Society of Health System Pharmacists. He presented Reist with certificate plaque, a PHS coin and a letter signed by Chief Pharmacy Officer RADM Scott F. Giberson.
