LECOM medical students participate in exercises leading up to the start of events at the 2010 Primary Care Olympics. To see more images of the event, click here.

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine medical students gathered at the John M. and Silvia Ferretti Medical Fitness and Wellness Center recently to participate in the annual Primary Care Olympics. This event is designed to bring first- and second-year medical students together with residents in internal medicine, family medicine and orthopedics for an event to emphasize team competition, healthy lifestyles and camaraderie.

Participants grouped together in teams of 10 participated in a variety of events including stationary bike riding, golf swing, a relay race, basketball free throw contest, push-ups and a swim relay.

A team of OMS-I students took home the gold medal for the competition: Justin Blaum, Kathryn Baier, James Franz, Harry McHenry, Zac Kuchta, Adam Biedny, Ben Grandy, Craig Van Tassel, Tyler Schmidt and Matthew Szymaszek. The silver medal team consisted of OMS-I students Steve Brennan, Rich Chow, Leanne Anderson, Heather Baran, Anthony Shen, Sean Bresnahan, Rhett Ketschke, Eric Wiglama, Bobby Hughes and Luisa Caparoula-Byce.

Two teams competed to a tie for the bronze medal. The first bronze medal team consisted of OMS-II students Addison Haynes, Lindsey Heidenreich, Dave Lankford, Jess Bartock, Kim Keefer, James Kyle, Andrew Truccone, Brandon Costello, Joel Himes and Michaela Hickey. The second team consisted of orthopedic residents Ishu Sigh, Brandon Trale, Russell Rana, Jeff Corneilson, Joe Baruso and Bill Browning.

“Special thanks to Dr. John and Dr. Silvia Ferretti for providing the location for the event this year at the Wellness Center, and to Dr. John for the medals and the prizes,” said Richard Ortoski, DO, Director of the Primary Care Education Department and organizer of the event. “Thanks also to Tyler Travis and Michael Hyek and the staff at the Wellness Center, and to all those who helped behind the scenes to make this event a success.”
