Pharmacy residency program accreditation extended
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists grants status
through 2013
The American
Society of Health-System Pharmacists Commission on Credentialing voted to extend accreditation
of the postgraduate pharmacy residency
program at Millcreek
Community Hospital and Lake Erie College of
Osteopathic Medicine through 2013. The commission arrived at its decision based on a thorough
review of the residency program’s progress report.
“For our residency program to
be acknowledged as deserving of continued accreditation speaks to the successful leadership of
Millcreek Community Hospital and the entire Millcreek Health System in forwarding the pharmacy profession,” said
Hershey Bell, M.D., M.S., Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the LECOM School of
Pharmacy. “Our residency program contributes to the advancement and expansion of the pharmacist’s responsibility to
serve patients in a clinical setting and to become a larger partner in the overall health care of
patients.”
The Pharmacy Practice Residency is a 12-month program established to meet
the goals of general practitioners according ASHP standards. The residency provides a substantial teaching component as well
as the opportunity to work with health care professionals in an interdisciplinary, multiple
practice environment. A large focus of the residency program is spent in academia and teaching
because of the association with LECOM’s College of Medicine and School of Pharmacy, as well as a Community / Teaching hospital (MCH).
“The extension of this accreditation makes the residency program much more attractive to
pharmacy students looking for
residencies,” said Tim Zurn, R.Ph., residency program director. “It speaks to the
commitment that MCH and LECOM School of Pharmacy have in terms of advancing the education of our
pharmacy students, especially the commitment of the faculty, staff and administration of Millcreek
Community Hospital and LECOM.”
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
and LECOM School of Pharmacy offer innovative and affordable education in osteopathic medicine and pharmacy. From campuses in Erie, Pennsylvania, Greensburg, Pennsylvania and Bradenton, Florida, LECOM
provides student-centered pathways to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.
