LECOM President receives commendation
American Osteopathic Association recognizes John M. Ferretti, DO
John M. Ferretti, DO, president and CEO of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine,
received a Presidential Citation from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Board of Trustees
during the organization’s House of Delegates meeting. The citation recognizes Dr.
Ferretti’s “dedication to advancing the interests of osteopathic medical
education” over his 35-year career in osteopathic medicine.

In his citation, Dr. Ferretti
was acknowledged for his commitment to the osteopathic profession, including the founding of LECOM
in 1992 and the creation of LECOM’s two additional locations in Bradenton, Fla., and
Greensburg, Pa. He was recognized for his leadership in fostering the growth of osteopathic
graduate medical education in Pennsylvania while serving as the director of medical education at
Millcreek Community Hospital for nearly 20 years, and was noted for the leadership roles he has
held with the AOA, the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (POMA), and the Assembly of
Presidents of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Ferretti was
lauded as one of the AOA’s Great Pioneers in Osteopathic Medicine, and for his previous
accolades as the American Osteopathic Foundation’s 1998 Educator of the Year, winner of
POMA’s Distinguished Service Award in 2005, and recognition as a Distinguished Pennsylvanian
by Gannon University in Erie in 2000.
In addition, the AOA reappointed Dr. Ferretti as
chairman of the AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. The COCA serves the public by
establishing, maintaining and applying accreditation standards and procedures to ensure that
academic quality and continuous quality improvement delivered by the colleges of osteopathic
medicine (COMs) reflect the evolving practice of osteopathic medicine. The scope of the COCA
encompasses the accreditation of the COMs.
