LECOM pharmacy students meet with state lawmakers in Pennsylvania and Florida

Students from the Lake Erie College of
Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy recently participated in the Pharmacy Association
Legislative Day at the Pennsylvania Capitol Building in Harrisburg, Pa and the Florida Pharmacists
Legislative Day in Tallahassee, Fla.
Legislative Day provides future pharmacists the
opportunity to bring any matters occurring in the world of pharmacy to the attention of the
legislators from their district. All pharmacy schools in Pennsylvania are invited to attend and
bring posters or other materials to help discuss any issue future pharmacists would hope to
improve. The LECOM students presented a posted which addressed current issues and barriers
regarding smoking cessation.
LECOM students attended a session of the House of
Representatives, and met with Rep. John Evans (R-5th), Rep. Florindo Fabrizio (D-2nd), and a staff
member of Sen. Jane Earll (R-49).
Legislative Day attendees from LECOM included
Jaime Caputo, Emily Wysocki, Megan Anderson, Michael Minor, Lauren Funwela, Lauren Hajdu, Ashley
Hartley, Richard Jay, Nate Dahl, Dumavo Atsou-Dzini and Olga Kurdelchuk, along with faculty members
Janene Madras, PharmD, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Director of Admissions and
Student Services, and Kim Burns, RPh, JD, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Bradenton Pharmacy Students Visit State Capitol
Students from LECOM School of Pharmacy Bradenton also attended a similar
event as part of Florida Pharmacists Legislative Day in Tallahassee, Fla.

Students
met with state Reps. Bill Galvano (R-Bradenton) and Doug Holder (R-Sarasota) and state Sen. Mike
Bennett (R-Bradenton) to discuss pharmacy legislation.
Pharmacy students from LECOM
School of Pharmacy Bradenton, Nova Southeastern, University of Florida, Florida A&M University
and Palm Beach Atlantic College gathered to promote the pharmacy profession.
The
students spoke with legislators about stopping further cuts in Medicaid and promoting programs to
help stop prescription drug abuse in Florida.
