Director of Orthopedic
Surgery Residency, Millcreek Community HospitalMore people are finding their lives
turned around and new mobility following surgery replacing worn and damaged knees, hips and other
joints. Orthopedic surgeons will replace nearly a million hips or knees this year –
that’s a fifty per cent

increase in the last decade.
New surgical procedures reduce the risks and
return nearly normal performance to patients receiving the latest orthopedic prosthetic devices.
Patients are electing total joint replacement surgery because of the proven success in relieving
pain.
On August 21, the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Millcreek Community
Hospital Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program will present a total joint replacement workshop at
the LECOM campus on West Grandview Boulevard.
Patients can learn about the signs that indicate
when joints need replacement. Pain, crunching and grinding of joints, loss of mobility leading to
loss of function will warn you when you need to see your doctor. The wearing out of joints,
wearing out of hips and knees will result in pain and stiffness.
Several factors lead to the
significant growth in total joint replacement surgery. Older persons are more active and putting
strain on aging weight bearing joints. Secondary osteoarthritis will contribute to loss of
mobility and pain. And in America, where obesity is itself a health risk, being overweight puts
more stress, wear and tear on joints.
There are new ways of treating these worn hips and
patients will learn what to expect after surgery. Those who attend the workshop will have a
chance to touch, feel and hold the latest in orthopedic prosthesis. These devices are made of the
materials and coatings designed to lengthen the function of replaced joints and provide much better
overall performance.
The workshop will help patients feel at ease and more informed about
total joint replacement surgery.
