AACOM’s Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) announced at the Annual Meeting that it had selected Wael Hakmeh as the 2007 National Student DO of the Year.

Dr. Hakmeh received his DO degree this June from LECOM. His fellow students had selected Dr. Hakmeh as their Student DO of the year before he graduated and nominated him for the national awarad.

Following graduation, he began an internship at the Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan. In 2006, Dr. Hakmeh traveled to Washington, DC, to serve as an Osteopathic Health Policy Intern, participating in the joint AACOM/AOA program that allows select students to spend a month at each organization developing an understanding and operational knowledge of federal health care policy formulation. As a result of the education and contacts he gained in the Osteopathic Health Policy Internship Program, Wael came back to Washington in 2007 to work with Rep. Conyers (D-MI) on the issue of universal health care.

In addition to having gained this policy expertise and boasting an excellent academic background, in 2006 Dr. Hakmeh won the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association Clinical Essay Contest Golden Quill Award for his paper, “A Proposal for the Modern Healthcare Crisis – An Osteopathic Patient-Centered Universal Health Care Program.”

Each year, the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents works through the Student Government Associations at osteopathic medical colleges to select a Student DO of the Year who exemplifies excellence at each institution. The National Student DO of the Year is selected from among these superior students.
