Medical students and administrators from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Bradenton campus attended the 16th Osteopathic Medicine Day at the Florida Legislature in Tallahassee.

Osteopathic Medicine Day gives state legislators the chance to meet leaders of the osteopathic profession in Florida. Legislators learn firsthand about the important role osteopathic physicians play in the delivery of quality health care to the citizens of Florida.

“I appreciate what you do; you heal people, and that’s a very high calling,” said Gov. Charlie Crist. “It’s a pretty incredible thing that you do. You are literally saving people’s lives.”

Gov. Crist addressed students and administrators from LECOM and Nova Southeastern University, along with representatives from the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA).

“We learned how much effort our local leaders put forth for our profession,” said LECOM third-year student Tanya Perich.

The day also gives Florida DOs a chance to help gain visibility for the osteopathic profession and see just how the legislative process works.

Students also met with Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater, Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink and Attorney General Bill McCollum.
