A new report shows that the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is one of the nation's leaders in training physicians with Hispanic backgrounds. With 17 Hispanic graduates in 2008, LECOM ranked ninth among all medical schools.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine OME news, the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine recently released its rankings of top colleges awarding degrees to Hispanics in 2008. As part of its rankings, Hispanic Outlook looked at the numbers of first professional degrees awarded to Hispanics in a variety of academic programs.

Because the rankings are based on categories (and data) determined by the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the schools awarding the most M.D. degrees to Hispanics are separated from the schools awarding the most D.O. degrees to Hispanics. However, AACOM worked with Hispanic Outlook to compile a list of the top-10 colleges awarding the most medical degrees (M.D. or D.O,) degrees to Hispanic students. Three Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, including LECOM, ranked in the top 10.

Hispanic Outlook reports that as the Hispanic population grows, the need for Hispanic doctors who both speak the language of these new U.S. residents and relate to them on the cultural level grows as well.
