Biomedical Science Program Leading to a Master of Science Degree

LECOM now offers a two-year, biomedical sciences curriculum that includes a more comprehensive learning opportunity for college students who want to pursue careers in medicine, pharmacy and other health and science related professions.

The Biomedical Sciences program, leading to the Master of Science degree, is a graduate-level program intended for post baccalaureate students who wish to enhance their understanding of the biomedical sciences and improve their overall profile to gain admission to medical school, pharmacy school, a biomedical Ph.D. program or enter the biomedical science workplace (e.g. the pharmaceutical industry). Through coursework, research design and experience and a comprehensive thesis project, this program will produce a well-qualified graduate ready to incorporate the challenges of modern medicine into his or her field of work. Successful completion of all phases of the Biomedical Science program will lead to the awarding of a Master of Science degree by the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM).

The program is founded on the following goals and objectives:

Goal I: Acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the basic biomedical sciences necessary for a career in the health professions.

1. Successfully complete a lecture-based curriculum in cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, histology, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, virology, pharmacology and toxicology.

2. Successfully complete electives in at least one of the following: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry/cell biology, microbiology, clinical pharmacology or medical education.

3. Participate in anatomy and microbiology laboratory experiences.

Goal II: Correlate the basic biomedical sciences with clinical applications in the health professions

1. Successfully complete a lecture-based curriculum in pathology and Introduction to Osteopathic Medicine.

2. Present and participate in seminar topics in pathology and the Biomedical Science Journal Club.

Goal III: Develop basic biomedical research skills

1. Successfully complete Biostatistics and Research Design courses.

2. Develop an original research proposal.

3. Successfully complete the research project, write a thesis and publicly defend the research.
