LECOM Celebrates A.T. Still's Birthday

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine took time on August 6th to mark the birthday of the founder of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Andrew T. Still was born 182 years ago on August 6, 1828.

LECOM staff celebrated A.T. Still's birthday with a cake designed by staff member Craig Zboyovski.

Dr. Still suffered great personal suffering during his lifetime. Three of his children died from meningitis at an early age. Their deaths prompted Dr. Still to look for a better way of practicing medicine. He believed doctors of his generation were poorly trained and overused drugs that were often worse than the diseases themselves. Still became a proponent of preventative medicine and wellness.  He believed physicians should focus on treating the whole patient, not just the disease.

Dr. Still founded the field of Osteopathic Medicine and opened the American School of Osteopathy in 1892 in Missouri. A new form of medicine was born. Today, there are more than 50,000 osteopathic doctors in the United States. Like Dr. Still, LECOM is committed to total wellness in each person, in our communities, and in our school.
