LECOM Erie - The Community is Our Campus

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine main campus sits along West Grandview Boulevard in Erie, PA. Grandview Boulevard is appropriately named because, from the LECOM campus, you can see the entire city of Erie; and looking beyond Presque Isle State Park, you can watch ships sailing across Lake Erie into southern Ontario, Canada.  The campus recently expanded to more than 50 acres with the addition of six buildings along West Grandview Boulevard.

With Millcreek Community Hospital )MCH) and the LECOM Clinical Practices, this teaching and learning center has grown to become the nation's largest medical college and the only academic health center in the osteopathic profession.

The main campus provides classroom and laboratory rooms for the College of Osteopathic Medicine, School of Dental Medicine and School of Pharmacy.

The new north entrance to the Grandview campus provides additional security and easy, street-level access from the main parking lots.  Students arriving for admission interviews will find an inviting lobby and a large meeting room where their visit to LECOM will begin.

Campus meets the learning needs of LECOM students

The college has four fully equipped lecture halls. Each of the two larger amphitheater style classrooms seats more than 250 students, while two smaller lecture halls, used by the School of Pharmacy, can handle up to 150 students each. All lecture halls have ‘smart classroom’ equipment, with wireless and wired computer network connections for student laptops. Classrooms offer multimedia presentations – DVD, VCR, slide and computer presentations. In the larger lecture halls, instructors control and illustrate presentations from a computer tablet at the lectern.

LECOM basic science professors can demonstrate cell biology and microbiology in a laboratory equipped with television monitors attached to microscopes. Each student has access to individual microscopes as they learn clinical laboratory procedures.

The study of the body is an important part of becoming a competent health care provider. LECOM teaches gross anatomy in a climate-controlled lab. A modern Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine training lab includes video monitors so students can see close-up demonstrations of OMM techniques.

The campus includes a student lounge/cafeteria where a professional food service staff provides breakfast and lunch. The staff also caters special events for the college. Throughout the day, students use the main lounge and the nearby Vora Student Lounge for both individual and group study, These areas also serves as a multi-purpose room for student club activities.  The LECOM Student Center on Peach Street provides after class study space along with a Coffee Culture Cafe and Eatery, which is also open to the public.

A three-story atrium off West Grandview Boulevard is used for official functions. The campus bookstore, which serves LECOM students and the Erie medical community along with the Learning Resource Center and library are on the third-floor, atrium level.

The Community is Our Campus

The West Grandview Boulevard building is just part of the LECOM Campus, which extends to affiliated teaching hospitals and clinics in Erie. Founded by Millcreek Community Hospital (MCH), LECOM is the only private college of osteopathic medicine with it's own teaching hospital and clinical practices. As part of Millcreek Health System, the college uses the facilities of the hospital, the Millcreek Geriatric Education and Care Center and the clinical offices of Medical Associates of Erie (MAE).

LECOM expanded west to the former LORD Grandview Technology Center with six modern buildings and an additional 28 acres of land adjacent to the main campus. The School of Dental Medicine will open a 30-chair  dental group practice in one of the buildings along with a primary care physician office. The dental school will train 50 fourth-year students at this location. The College will use the remaining buildings for future expansion to provide research and learning space.

LECOM's bayfront campus, a former corporate office building situated along Presque Isle Bay, is used by Problem-Based Learning groups and the Graduate Studies programs: Master of Education in Medical Education, the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences, and Post Baccalaureate program.

The College owns and operates the John M. and Silvia Ferretti Medical Fitness and Wellness Center located near MCH. This facility brings medical care together with fitness by teaming LECOM with MCH and the clinical practices to make a medical fitness difference in local healthcare.  Open to students and the public, the center is a facility where anyone can experience and learn about the “medical fitness difference” that makes a positive impact on patients and personal well-being.

LECOM has opened a clinical education center as part of Plaza 18, one of the MAE clinics. LECOM expanded and equipped patient rooms as physical exam training stations for LECOM medical students. Meeting standardized patients, students learn how to employ the clinical examination and communication skills they will need to confidently serve as partners with their patients on the pathway to health and well-being.
