APAP Curriculum

Accepted students will enter LECOM under one of three current learning pathways: Lecture Discussion Pathway, Problem-Based Learning, or Independent Study Pathway. Each pathway is tailored to the individual’s learning style. For more information on the curriculum of each pathway, return to the curriculum/pathways page.

How does APAP work?
The first year of didactic curriculum runs from the last week of July through May. Students within LDP will follow a two-phase curriculum. Phase I Core Curriculum is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of Gross Anatomy, Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology. Phase II Curriculum uses a systems approach to medical education. Those following ISP attend classes in anatomical sciences in the first semester transitioning to studying directed by highly structured learning objectives and self-directed learning modules. Those in the PBL pathway utilize a series of patient cases that focus on learning the basic and clinical sciences required to understand patient problems. Small groups meet with a faculty member, who serve as facilitators and do not teach in the traditional sense, two to three times each week. Students work within these groups and independently to develop learning issues before the next meeting, at which time new information is discussed and refined in the context of the case.

In contrast to the LDP, PBL and ISP pathways, the first year of didactic instruction is immediately followed by eight weeks of primary care clinical clerkships instead of the standard two-month summer break. Students then return to the second year of didactic instruction from August through May before finishing their program with the final year of clinical clerkships.

Clinical Clerkships
As prior clinical clerkships of Physician Assistant programs lack specific osteopathic manipulative training, students matriculating within APAP will participate in early clinical clerkship exposure with two four-week Primary Care rotations, one being in Family Medicine with an osteopathic physician whose concentration is manipulative medicine. The second four weeks will be a primary care rotation in pediatrics, family medicine or internal medicine. Students will then return to complete the second year of didactic studies. Following the second year of didactic studies, students will finish their training with 48 weeks of clinical clerkships that include OB/GYN, Psychiatry, Surgery, Ambulatory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Rural/Underserved Medicine and a sub-internship rotation in the field of study chosen as their residency choice. Overall, 82 weeks of didactic curriculum and 56 weeks of clinical clerkships provide a total of 138 weeks of instruction.
